About The Stumps

The group originally got together to play Beatles songs for a talent contest in 1964. It wasn’t until later the decision was made to actually form a real band and The Stumps was born. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- During the sixties and early seventies The Stumps were one of Dayton’s most popular groups. They opened for many national acts such as The Young Rascals, The Cyrkle, Buffalo Springfield, Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, The McCoys, The Five Americans, The Outsiders, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, Steppenwolf, B.J. Thomas, Archie Bell and The Drells, The Cryin’ Shames, The Seeds and more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The band's then manager, Bob Holiday, was a local disc jockey and program director for WONE and WING. He was responsible for their record contract and a summer tour in 1967 with Buffalo Springfield (For What It's Worth) and The Five Americans (Western Union). The Southwest tour included concerts in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and eventually ended in Tucson where The Stumps were featured on the Dick Clark Happening '67 Tour. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 2002 Bacchus Archives released a CD collection (Think Of The Good Times : The Tucson 60's Sound 1959-1968) which features The Stumps 1966 single release as the opening/title track. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The reunited group consists of original members Mark Fraze (Bass and Vocals) and Jim Daily (Guitar, Harmonica and Vocals) plus musicians John De Boer (Keyboards, Flute and Vocals), Kenny Collins (Guitar, Harmonica and Vocals) and Gary Marcum (Drums, Percussion and Vocals). Alumni members Steve Common (Guitar) and Mike Chafee (Vocals and Percussion) live out of state and join us when possible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The original members have remained friends since the 60’s and it is believed that The Stumps is the only local band to get back together after 30 years, then again at more than 40 years. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are pleased to announce that the band will continue to make music in the future and hope you will attend some of our shows in '09 and beyond. See you soon!!! You know all the tunes...that's what we're here for.
