About Joni in the Moon

Whilst from Perth, it’s easy to get lost in Joni In The Moon’s infinitely layered universe and wonder what planet they’re from. Born from stargazing siblings Joni and Josh Hogan, their otherworldly spin on folktronica, world beats and poptronica leanings have seen comparisons as diverse as Tuung, Björk, Sarah Blasko, Flying Lotus, London Grammar, Florence & The Machine and Feist, yet still make little headway in adequately capturing their uniquely creative, heavenly song journeys. Josh’s background as a film scorer, computer game soundtrack composer, music lecturer and certified Ableton master has enabled their impossibly lush, cinematic soundscapes and beautifully beaty beds upon which Joni’s breathtaking vocals lie, and then explode from, her emotionally charged voice flickering effortlessly from empowering to effecting. ‘The Moon’s captivating aural flights have been turning heads skywards, with multiple songs nominated for WAM Song Of The Year awards, triple j play achieved and strong community radio airplay around Australia. Debut album Sorrow Trees was released in 2014 to loud critical applause, The Music describing it as “magical... stellar... surreal... intoxicating... Do yourself a favour and listen to this album.” With songs like Li’l Star described by X-Press Magazine as “an electric and energetic anthem,” Joni In The Moon swiftly became RTRFM favourites, and Joni’s vocal prowess also became in hot demand, seeing her joining the stage with Abbe May for her headline set at RTRFM’s signature event In The Pines, as well as guest vocal spots on May and Katy Steele’s upcoming albums. Not just a divine studio project, on the live stage is really where ‘The Moon shines, Joni’s mesmerizing presence breathtaking to behold and Josh’s live programming keeping their sound evolving. They’re also joined live by renowned musicians Tara John (Schvendes) on keys, Steve Richter (Tetrafide Percussion, Taal Naan) on percussion and oft Ofa Fotu (when not fronting Odette Mercy & Her Soul Atomics). They’ve become a favourite on the local festival circuit, including highlight performances at the Beaufort Street Festival, State Of The Art, the WAM Festival, Hidden Treasures and offBEAT. They’ve also supported touring acts We Two Thieves, Mali (from Boston’s Jaggery) and Sam Buckingham, and graced the east coast with a debut tour last October. Joni In The Moon have just been warming up though, with next single War & Porn set to see the band taking lunar leaps forward July 24, signalling the first signs of intricate life off their sophomore album to be delivered in the not too distant future...
