About Natalie Merchant

Natalie Merchant
Natalie Anne O'Shea Merchant (born October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York, U.S.) is a professional musician. She co-founded and fronted the band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981, but left the band in 1993 and started a successful solo career. Merchant plays the piano, produces and writes many of her songs.
Her debut solo album Tigerlily (1995) had three top-40 singles: 'Carnival', 'Jealousy' and 'Wonder'. This was followed in 1998 with her second solo album Ophelia, and her third in 2001 with Motherland.
Merchant has sung alongside Tracy Chapman, Michael Stipe, David Byrne and Peter Gabriel. She has also collaborated with Billy Bragg a number of times, including the 1998 album Mermaid Avenue. Like Bragg, her work touches on social and political themes; she has been active in promoting a number of campaigning issues in both her songs and through the causes to which she lends her name.

What fans are saying
Just simply a incredibly gifted, beautiful soul! Natalie offered her new album with St. Joan of Arc on the cover signed in silver with all her new material for fans to purchase. What a great venue and a beautiful evening we shared with both Natalie Merchant and her band mate Erik Della Penna on electric acoustic guitar. Natalie is a great story teller also, she had us laughing and crying with her soulful remberance of a very special friend who had passed. Laughing at her experience with riding SEPTA in Philadelphia going to the Art Museum lol (very funny)! She has a wonderful mind with the ability to go from telling a story and then back to her music, just remarkable. I cannot say enough about how incredible both Natalie was on the beautiful piano and Erik on the guitar! They played “Wonder”, “Kind and Generous” and “carnival” and many of her new songs mixed in to make the evening so spectacular and the crowd wondering what would be next as the listened carefully in the edges of their seats! What a special intimate evening we shared together!

The Natalie Merchant concert was absolutely fabulous! The setting, the band (mini orchestra) and back up singers were great. But I can't say enough about how wonderful Natalie sounded, how her songs and her being are always so moving! The audience was totally in sync with her performance. What a treat!

The show was incredible, what a band, and what a singer she is. But most of all what a personality. It was all so impressive, her performance, her speeches and of course her songs are touching you deep in the heart. Magic! Tears in my eyes, such a beautiful person.
