The band formed in mid 2015 with the single goal of subverting tiring and overdone hardcore and metal tropes in favour of experimental and progressive ideas that form the basis of the band's sound from the likes of indie emo, funk, alternative rock, and avant-garde.
Since 2015, The First Child have made a name for themselves in the New Zealand local scene for their progressive approach in the realm of emo and hardcore favouring the use of technical and discordant song structures versus the over-used trope of open power chord breakdowns from their Kiwi peers.
