About Larra Skye

Larra Skye sings with a sweet voice tinged with pop and folk. Her sophomore album, Wishing Tree, will be released April 2, 2013 on AudioMaiden Music. Produced Marc Rogers (Philosopher Kings) and Karen Kosowski (Emma-Lee), it features a duet with Canadian singer-songwriter Peter Katz, and a French-language composition co-written with Marcel Aymar of Franco-Ontarian group CANO. Skye’s voice has drawn comparisons to Feist, Sarah Harmer and Stevie Nicks; her genre-spanning music recalls Lana Del Rey, Aimee Mann, Metric, Portishead and Pink Floyd. Her songs attract lovers of intimate folk and pop music. Skye has toured in Canada and the U.S. Skye’s first album The World Disappears was #1 bestselling independent jazz album of the year for HMV Canada. It debuted at #1 on Toronto’s CIUT 89.5 FM in 2006. Since then, her original compositions have been receiving airplay from jazz & campus stations worldwide, and the CBC. A versatile musician, Skye has played mandolin and recorded vocals for Americana / Blues singer-songwriter Paul Woolner, collaborated on a vinyl single with Montreal house music duo EZLV (“Change My Future” Suricate Label 2012), played trombone with rock band Rebel Emergency (opening for Toots & the Maytals), and studied classical voice at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto. Growing up in Newmarket, Ontario, Skye learned to play guitar from the books in her parents’ bookstore. Music was in the family; sister Rosanne Baker Thornley’s 1993 album, Courage, was distributed by Sony Music. By 13, Skye was singing in a professional children’s choir and performing her original songs regularly at a local coffeehouse. In 2003, Skye studied at Ryerson University’s journalism school. A backyard jam that summer led to a collaboration with songwriter Gerard P. Finn (Damhnait Doyle, EMI). Several months later, Skye decided to take a one-year leave from her studies, move to Hamilton and work with Gerard. They returned to Toronto in 2005 to complete the The World Disappears. Recorded at Reaction Studios in 2005, it features some of the most respected musicians in Canada, including: pianist Adrean Farrugia (Matt Dusk), bassist Jim Vivian (Shuffle Demons), trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, and guitarist Matt Stevens (Christian Scott). *It's Larra Skye.
