About Mexico City

Brisbane alt-country rock troupers Mexico City are back with their latest release, Closer To Home.

Produced by Jamie Trevaskis at his Wild Mountain Sound studio in Brisbane’s hinterland, the new album combines the crackle and spark of the five-piece’s garage rock roots with a side serving of tough but tender country soul, thanks in large part to the band’s newest members, Conrad Taylor on bass guitar and Joe Cryle on pedal and lap steel guitar.

Put down live to tape, the album reflects the pastoral environment in which it was recorded, with bird calls and other ambient noises heard in the record’s quieter moments, plus a couple of epic guitar workouts mirroring the expansive night skies they were performed under.

Australia’s roots music bible, Rhythms, said Closer to Home distills “elements of alt-country, blues and soul into a rough-hewn country rock gem, ragged in its glory and yet evoking that uniquely Australian feeling of the wide-open spaces. Joe Cryle’s pedal steel brings a touch of melancholy to tough songs that resonate with tenderness…Mexico City charter the parched terrain where The Dingoes once roamed, uncompromisingly evocative artisans of Oz rock, [and] there’s no higher praise than that.”
