About Red Son

In uncertain times RED SON remains consistent. Crushing though the hardcore scene with a genuine desire to create something heartfelt, relevant and breakneck heavy. The band has steeped it's roots in nothing less than a love for music and the integrity of D.I.Y. attitude. It is this blend of ideals coupled with vocalist Jason Anthony's fierce, unadulterated social commentary that has helped establish the sound RED SON has become known for. With an idea nestled somewhere between Madball, Motorhead, Snapcase and Black Sabbath, Jason approached former Where Eagles Dare band mate and guitar player Craig Gurka wondering if he was interested in starting a new band. A few days later Craig handed Jason a CD of riffs that lead to Red Son's first song Light of Day and brought his bass playing comrade Jeff Luman into the mix. In the following months the band adopted Josh Kirshner of the now defunct Obskurity on guitar and Ian Rowe of Run With The Hunted fame on drums and started working out songs and playing shows. With five originals (2 of which that did not make it onto the record) and a cover of Unbroken's Final Expression they set off to Ryan Butler's (Landmine Marathon/Unruh) Arcaine Studio to record their debut 7" record MMVII. The anthem Don't Sing This Song soon caught on as the ironic sing-along for pile-ons and stage dives. After a few more months of writing and playing a few more shows the time came to record the full length Set Everything In Motion. Jason called up Byron Filson of Villain Recording Studio and the crew hammered out 12 songs over the course of a few days. The result was raw, stripped down and brutal with songs like The Blackest Nobility, I. F.A.V.O.R. T.O.M. F.R.O.S.T., and Toppling Statues becoming crowd favorite's. These tunes began molding the band's sound into the bludgeoning juggernaut that it has become. Seemingly unfortunate news that Ian was leaving the band to focus his efforts to his first love of guitar playing in Run With The Hunted was soothed as he agreed to accompany Red Son on their first tour up the West Coast. Unwilling to just settle for good enough, RED SON took an unscheduled hiatus until the drummers spot was filled with the perfect match. Jesse Mitchell, classically trained, music instructor and percussive wizard was mentioned to the band by another would be drummer, Logan aka Harley Magnum current vocalist for Knights of the Abyss. Patience was rewarded as Jesse learned the songs and began to write new songs with the band and what was initially a potentially crippling loss became a blessing as the bands backbone was now stronger than ever . Finally, the position was satisfied. Enthusiastic to make up for lost time RED SON made plans to record a 5 song E.P. So, back into Villain Recording Studio to engineer what would become Forget The Rhetoric. This would be a sort of welcome back record for the band after the unexpected line up change. The 5 songs were met with open arms as their support grew with the emotionally driven torrent Wash Over Me quickly surfacing as a favorite, inciting more of the exuberant crowd participation that feeds the bands high energy shows. Still running off the success of Forget The Rhetoric, RED SON is ready to release another 5 songs this September 11th in an E.P. entitled The Hopeless Dreamers, again with the help and patience long time friend and recording guru Byron Filson. Now with Michael Kazmer filling the responsibilities on bass as Jeff has the recent responsibility of a growing family (best wishes in his future endeavors). RED SON is still running strong and planning to continue building on the foothold they have firmly planted both out of state and at home. In their time as a band they've had the pleasure of sharing the stage with the likes of: Every Time I Die, Terror, Strike Anywhere, Landmine Marathon, Broadway Calls, Lionheart, Shai Hulud, Reign Supreme, Outbreak, Touche Amore, Shipwreck A.D. and many others always with enthusiastic responses and are always looking forward to the next show, wherever it might be.
