Every Atlas

In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan. Son of Iapetus and brother of Prometheus and Epimetheus, he was condemned to support the sky on his shoulders for rebelling against Zeus. Thus the association of Atlas and those who carry great burdens. Atlas is also a bound collection of maps and, in anatomy, the first cervical vertebra which supports the head. Alex Periera started Every Atlas in 2008 when he was a freshmen in high school. Back then, it was a 15 year old with an acoustic guitar, but has since grown into much more. Before releasing an album of his own, Alex recruited local musician Dustin Andrews and the two quickly wrote their first album, "The Ghosts of Everyone", together. "Ghosts" saw mild success, particularly during the early days of propertyofzack.com, before he became a staple in the music scene. Justin Little of Zeitgeist Records (Death Cab for Cutie), compared the album to the sound of Neutral Milk Hotel. The band followed with an EP of songs they had written around that time (Big Bad Wolf, 2010) and quickly began work on their next record. Being the ever revolving door of members that Every Atlas is, Colton Saylor and Robb McGregor joined the band for their second album (on drums and bass, respectively). "burn down the forests! bleed out the oceans! the deserts and canyons will sing!" was recorded at Lostwood Studios in Lancaster, CA and released in 2010 on Quote Your Pulse Records. At this time the band wanted to focus on finding local members to complete the line up, since Colton and Robb play in other bands and are from the other side of California. Alex brought in long time friend and supporter Manuel Lopes on drums and the three began writing new songs and filling out old ones. They then recruited friend and former local musician Chris Dunne to play bass. Now as a 4 piece, they began playing shows and working on a new, heavier album. 3 songs were released in 2012 (Hunted, Halcyon Days and AB Aeterno), but in early 2013 Dustin left the band due to disagreements and to focus on his other project, Of Us Giants. Because of this, the record was never finished and had to be scrapped. Soon after, Chris Dunne left to pursue other interests as well. So, feeling refreshed and new as a band, Alex and Manuel began writing LP3 for the second time. The writing of the entire new album was propelled by the departure of Andrews as a musician (and at the time, a friend) and the break up of Alex and his girlfriend of 3 years. Alex and Manuel began recording in late 2013 and released the first single from the album in December. "Fragile Bones" is a shaky, psychedelic pop rock jam about letting go that has been received well since its' release. SoundInTheSignals.com had this to say: "The vocals are really strong and really remind me of Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra) while maintaining a unique quality. "Fragile Bones" has a great mixture of soft and heavy indie rock. Lyrically it's cool and it's the kind of song you can listen to and go back to almost instantly. The second track "Threes" is very well done and ends out the two song release really strongly. This is great music for this time of the year.
