About Haroula Rose

HERE THE BLUE RIVER, Rose's sophomore LP, heralds a sound that has evolved from the traditional acoustic folk of her debut THESE OPEN ROADS, into more developed, full arrangements reminiscent of Daniel Lanois' production if he could have worked with Judee Sill or Townes Van Zandt. "Here The Blue River" is a phrase in an Emerson poem entitled "The River" that encapsulates the theme: nothing lasts forever. “This is definitely a relationship record. It’s about how our relationships are also about how we relate to ourselves, to nature, how we are alienated from it, how we seek to understand these mysteries that surround us….how as human beings our impulse is to create and to destroy things.” Jim White, the southern gothic multi-hyphenate, Zac Rae (“sonic whiz” currently touring with Death Cab for Cutie, and who has collaborated with the likes of Alanis Morrisette, Gnarls Barkley, Fiona Apple, My Brightest Diamond, Sara Lov, Pedestrian and countless others), and Luke Top (Fool’s Gold, Cass McCombs, Cece Bastida) were involved in production. “This album took a while not only because I was working on films but also because I was trying to figure out what story I want to tell, what’s most important to me, and how to do that with more dynamic arrangements.” "Haroula Rose sings with the spirit of a gypsy soul, always searching for meaning or a seed of truth in each fleeting moment. Her voice is at once intimate and solacing, its gentle inflections betraying a subtle, plaintive sway that enriches moments of guitar-driven folk with the pathos of classic country." -Donald Gibson, NO DEPRESSION Rose was born and raised in Chicago, but learned Greek before English as a child, from her Greek immigrant parents - full name being Haroula Rose Spyropoulos. She is now based primarily in Los Angeles. Rose has written and released several critically acclaimed albums. Her five song EP "Someday" (2009), her debut LP "These Open Roads" (2011), her second EP "So Easy" (2012), and several remixes, covers, and singles. Her songs can be heard in TV series such as AMERICAN HORROR STORY, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, MARRY ME, AWKWARD, BEING HUMAN, UNDEREMPLOYED as well as many others, and films such as STILL ALICE and FOR A GOOD TIME, CALL.... Rose's films and videos - which she has either directed, written, produced and/or performed in - have screened internationally and won various awards. These include feature films such as FRUITVALE STATION, the upcoming comedy PERMANENT, as well as documentaries HEAVEN ADORES YOU, THE FEAR OF 13, and her short films WEDDING DRESS, NO LOVE SONG in which she also co-starred with Rosanna Arquette and Daniel Ahearn, and BABY CRAZY. She is also in development on the screen adaptation of Bonnie Jo Campbell's award winning novel ONCE UPON A RIVER, which she will also direct, and was the inspiration for the song "Margo." Rose received her BA and MA at the University of Chicago, and attended USC's MFA program in film. She was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to Madrid, Spain, where she lived for two years. In 2014 she was a participant in Tribeca's All Access Program and was invited to be a part of the Los Cabos Film Festival's international co-production forum. In 2015 she was selected to be part of the Warner Brothers Directing Program and the inaugural year of Time Warner's Incubator Project 150 for which she wrote and directed a half hour pilot. The pilot, LOST & FOUND premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, went on to win the Audience Award at Bentonville Film Festival and heads to Seriesfest in June 2017.
