About Diafrix

Diafrix, the strikingly unique Melbourne based, African born hip-hop duo, return this September with their outstanding second studio album, Pocket Full of Dreams. The duo – born from the Melbourne suburb of Footscray - comprises of two frontmen, Momo and Azmarino, both of whom are African refugees but have lived through struggles which are worlds apart. Momo arrived in Australia with his family at the age of three after fleeing their homeland of the Comoros Islands. Azmarino, on the other hand, originally hails from Eritrea but didn't arrive in Australia until earlier this decade – after a life of citizenship hunting throughout countries like Jordan, Italy and Switzerland. Definitely not the typical story of an Australian band, but one that reflects an underrepresented and growing community of first generation Australians. After years of building a solid reputation for high-energy performances, and incredible charisma (both on and off stage) within Melbourne’s ultra competitive live music scene throughout the mid 2000s, Diafrix released their acclaimed debut album, Concrete Jungle. The album was an eclectic concoction of socially aware yet accessible hip-hop, reggae, funk and African sounds – an effort the boys were rewarded with by winning Best Homegrown New Artist in the coveted Age EG Awards in 2009. Over the next couple of years, Diafrix continued on their skyward trajectory, bringing their exhilarating live show to festivals such as Glastonbury, Big Day Out, Meredith, Pyramid Rock, Hot BBQ,, Good Vibrations, Sydney Music Festival and Falls Festival, whilst landing high profile support slots for the likes of Bruno Mars, Tinie Tempah, B.o.B. and Lupe Fiasco. Early in 2011, they undertook their second European tour in two years, playing packed-out intimate venues in Paris, London, Bristol, Monaco and Amsterdam. Now in 2012, Diafrix return with their new album. In a collection of soaring hooks, eclectic production, big name guests and their trademark charismatic and aspirational song writing, Diafrix deliver their finest work yet with Pocket Full of Dreams, an unashamedly large, world class rap album. Boasting the Triple J favourite singles "Simple Man" and "Running It", and new club single "Helicopter", Momo and Azmarino are also joined by special guest appearances from 360, Dwele and Daniel Merriweather. With the majority of the production helmed by Styalz Fuego, the producer & songwriter behind 360's platinum Falling & Flying LP and standout tracks with Aston Shuffle, Chamillionaire, Bluejuice and Seth Sentry, Diafrix are provided a sublime array of slick, current hip-hop that takes in influences ranging from vintage reggae to deep house, dancehall to 90's NYC rap and indie-rock to neo-soul, resulting in an excitingly refreshing take on internationally toned Australian music. Additional Production is handled by ARIA Award winner M-Phazes (Bliss n Eso, Kimbra), Ptereo Stylus (Joelistics) and one of Australia’s most talented dance music exports Wax Motif (Crookers, Chromeo, Usher) Arriving almost four years after their debut album Concrete Jungle, Pocket Full of Dreams continues an important, ongoing theme for Diafrix as a group - representing the hope and dreams of those who don't have a voice, in turn becoming inspiring examples of two dreamers overcoming hardship and obscurity to realise their own.
