About Doran

Doran got its start in 2015, beginning as a casual jam session in the living room of a duplex in San Marcos, Texas.

Chris (bass player) had met Tony (guitarist) in a German language class earlier that year. They didn't speak much aside from the occasional nod of recognition at hearing the word "Primus" muttered across the room. On the last day of class, they met up for a drink afterward. They talked music and have been close friends and collaborators ever since.

The band needed a singer and hoped to find someone whose creativity was only surpassed by raw power and talent. Thankfully the stars aligned, and they found just the one. Chris had been in a soul band the previous year and had worked with a singer named Amrit whom he thought might be perfect for the sound they wanted. The audition lasted maybe 30 seconds before she was welcomed in.

The group was called "The Great Lucian" at that time, and enjoyed some moderate success in the Austin area, playing the gambit of 6th Street bars, and connecting quite well with other members of the Texas music scene.

–Cut to one and a half years later–

The band moved to Eugene, Oregon and was in need of a drummer. Fortunately the stars aligned. Again.

Juan seemed excited when he heard about the opening, so much so that he went out and bought an entire drum set just to audition (mentioning that although there was always the chance it might not work out, he had a good feeling). He immediately became an invaluable member of the band, adding a wild, groove-based heartbeat, and bringing a slew of new ideas and exciting energy to the sound.

We then became "Doran," named after an obscure reference to Amrit's favorite childhood book, Wise Child. The book described a "doran" as a walker between worlds, a bridge between light and dark, a force moving toward transcendent awakening. It became our group intention of sorts, and we haven't looked back yet.

Our goals are to keep writing music that we can barely play (in order to push ourselves) and to one day tour the world with a message of understanding that can only be felt through music.
