About Sports Fan

Sports Fan unleash intelligent, ultra-catchy power-pop through piano, bass, drums and close vocal harmonies. Individually, they obsess over bicycles, tattoos, coffee, comics, perfect pop structures, ice hockey, acronyms, gadgets and vinyl. Collectively, they make more noise than should be possible for two drumsticks, three voices, four strings and eighty-eight keys. Dion Read (Piano, Lead Vocals) and Vincent Kemp (Drums, Harmonies) met in 2011 at their day job, selling musical equipment in between dancing to Justin Timberlake and working out who would sing which harmony over the entire Ben Folds Five catalogue. With a drum kit borrowed from Vinnie’s nephew, Sports Fan played their first shows as a two-piece, ala Dresden Dolls, and laid down a collection of rehearsal room demos. Ben Webster (Bass, Harmonies), a regular purchaser of musical equipment, heard these demos and made it very, very clear that if there were to be bass guitar in the band, then he would be the one playing it. As a three piece, Sports Fan have been performing since late 2012. New single This is Goodbye reveals a darker edge to the Sports Fan repertoire, contrasting with previous singles Little White Lies and Shallow Water. These three singles along with eight other tracks, make up Sports Fan’s debut album which is scheduled for a Winter 2015 release. The eleven-track album features guest appearances from Ball Park Music’s Jen Boyce and electro-folk songstress Tara Simmons, and will be released independently in Australia with Asian distribution through Japan’s ThisTime Records. We make more noise than should be possible for two drumsticks, three voices, four strings and eighty-eight keys.
