About Dirty Lucy
Nicole Brophy and Jodi Moore met in 2000, and an impromptu jam session resulted in some local gigs around the pubs and clubs of NSW south coast as duo Nicole Brophy and Jo. With festival directors knocking on their door they formalized their arrangement, bought a van, got an ABN and hit the road on a tour that would last for almost four years. In 2002 they ventured into a recording studio for the first time between tours, laying down tracks for their debut album Dark Green and changed their name to Dirty Lucy. Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie, Whitlams drumming sensation Terepai Richmond, bassist Alex Hewitson and lap steel genius Dave Steel joined the girls in the studio to add the necessary flesh on the album. They won a trip to perform at ILMC in London and stopped by Austin Texas to perform at SXSW on the way home. Their show in a small 150 seat theatre sold out and was received with three standing ovations and multiple reviews declaring Jodi Moore as “the Hendrix of the Violin”. Dark Green was well received by critics and music fans across the country. Rave reviews and high rotation on Triple J and community stations across the board for the first single Nothing Is Free made it a hugely successful debut release from an exciting young independent Australian band. Dirty Lucy shared stages with the like of The Waifs, The John Butler Trio, The Whitlams, Iota, and many more. They graced the stages at Woodford Folk Festival, East Coast Blues and Roots, Womadelaide and played in every nook and cranny of this wide brown land. In 2006 they released "Music, People, Cities, Lights and Darkness". Moving from the freedom of the open road to the confines and congestion of inner city Melbourne is reflected in this EP. Dirty Lucy went on hiatus in mid 2007, in the meantime Nicole joined the touring band of Multi-ARIA nominated artist Kate Miller-Heidke in February 2008 and hit the road again for the past two years playing to thousands of people at festivals and theatres both here and overseas. Jodi has continued to play with an array other artist both live and in the studio. Album credits include Jen Cloher and Mia Dyson. In 2010 she composed and performed alongside Pieta Farrell to create the show 'Bird in A Gilded Cage' which was performed at Adelaide Fringe Festival in the same year. She is currently touring with The Oily Girls and when not on tour, Jodi is engineering and producing artists at MusicLand and at her home studio in Melbourne. In 2010 Nicole embarked on a 6 week national tour as part of the unique combination of four artists from four states called 'The United Tour' launching her debut EP 'Stubborn Love' released independently. The girls collaborated again where Jodi played viola and mandolin, co produced and co wrote the songs. “Moore’s inventive playing has drawn comparisons to Jimi Hendrix- high yet deserved praise- and Nicole Brophy has a voice possessing everything that is good about country singing, with the grunt and raunch of the great female rock tradition thrown in for good measure” Rolling Stone “Every now and again there is a buzz surrounding a band that gets increasingly louder with every gig. After Dirty Lucy’s performance at this year East Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Byron Bay the industry was humming with news of this talented duo. Member of the music industry widely praising the bands hybrid blend of folk country. The pair are an unusual combination, with the wild punk feel of Moore’s violin playing and the soulful vocals of Brophy” Sun Herald “Abandoning the once-folky sounds of old, Melbourne duo Dirty Lucy crash back with a hard-rocking track that highlights the gritty vocal diversity of lead singer Nicole Brophy. ‘10 Ft Tall’ and B-side ‘Do Gooders’ both take in all that’s good about country music, adding in a healthy dose of raunch, a dash of grunt and a splash of good ol’ rock’n’roll.” Time Off Magazine “For those of you wondering where Magic Dirt’s femme-growl went when Adalita discovered power pop, try Dirty Lucy on for size – 10 Ft Tall is an ace bit of churning radio rock with more than a nod to screaming females who went before.” Inpress Magazine “Brophy and Moore have a striking presence” Sydney Morning Herald Nicole Brophy’s vocal arrangements and gritty guitar riffs teamed with Jodi Moore’s electric violin whines - she has been called the ‘Hendrix of the violin’, electric guitar style mandolin plus backing vocals.
