Veruschka

Soul/Pop Singer-songwriter Veruschka hails from Perth, Western Australia. Fiercely proud of her Jamaican and German roots, (courtesy of her mother and father respectively), it was no surprise that music became a way for Veruschka to connect with her ethnicity whilst growing up in a predominately all white area. Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley and Aretha Franklin quickly became staples in Veruschka’s music library, and represent a small handful of many artists that have inspired her to sing.

Veruschka started singing initially as a hobby at church in her teens, and then quickly realized that she could perform and supplement her income by gigging, while completing a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts with a major in dance and minor in drama.

After completing her university education in Melbourne, Veruschka moved to Sydney with plans of working as a contemporary dancer, but destiny had and other ideas. A woman from her church who’d never heard her sing, had a strong sense that music was in Veruschka’s future and gave her free singing lessons. You could say that it was something of a ‘divine intervention’, and not being one to ignore a sign Veruschka turned her attention to honing her voice and commenced working on songwriting.

Destiny paid off, for within a year of turning her back on the dance world, Veruschka’s demo of her song “Easier” was a selected as a top 10 finalist in the Urban Music Category for the Oz Music Awards, Australia’s most noted unsigned songwriting completion.

Within another year Veruschka found herself performing at the MTV After Party, and since then has gone on to work as a vocalist in film, worked with an Aria nominated producer and released her own music independently, as well as continuing to perform on regular basis.
