Zhao is not about a single fixed identity. Born in Tennessee to Chinese immigrants, he grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta before moving to Los Angeles. Taking cues from the likes of James Blake, The XX, Washed Out, and Tame Impala, Zhao can be counted among those for whom music provides deep emotional catharsis.

Zhao’s early training in classical piano forms the backbone of his sound, and while his range of influences is vast, the impact of that training is a consistent through line. In the years following his initial classical training Zhao taught himself numerous instruments, music production, and studied pop music theory. These skills inform a continually curious mind, always bent on self-discovery.
