About Lou Barlow

Lou Barlow stands as a quietly transformative figure in American indie rock. After cutting his teeth with the hardcore punk outfit Deep Wound in the early 1980s, he co‑founded Dinosaur Jr. in Amherst, Massachusetts. Though temporarily ousted in 1988, his return years later helped fuel the band’s enduring creative surge.
In 1986, Barlow launched Sebadoh with Eric Gaffney—and later Jason Loewenstein—ushering in the cassette‑recorded, emotionally candid lo‑fi movement with early releases like The Freed Man and Weed Forestin’. He later expanded his palette with The Folk Implosion, whose 1995 breakout single “Natural One” bridged underground cred and chart recognition. In June 2024, the band re‑emerged with Walk Thru Me, their first album in a quarter‑century released via Joyful Noise.
On the solo front, Barlow has steadily deepened his introspection. After Emoh (2005), Goodnight Unknown (2009), and Brace the Wave (2015), he put out Reason to Live in May 2021—a record steeped in maturity, shaped by life as a husband, father of three, and musician balancing home with touring, now settled back in Massachusetts .
Beyond albums and touring, Barlow has ventured into new creative territory with RAW Impressions, a weekly podcast co-hosted with his wife, fiber artist Adelle Barlow. Since its launch in late 2022, the show blends candid personal conversation, music, and covers—like Lou’s revived four‑track demo "K‑Sensa‑My"—alongside commentary on family life, art, and creativity. With over 200 episodes and high listener ratings, the podcast continues to offer a warm, behind‑the‑scenes window into their lives .
Complementing the podcast is the Barlow Family General Store, their online shop featuring handcrafted goods and original musical creations. From Adelle’s knitwear and ornaments to Lou’s personalized handwritten lyrics, limited‑run lathe‑cut singles, signed light‑blue vinyl editions of Reason to Live, T‑shirts, CDs, and more, the store reflects their handmade ethos and connects fans directly with the family’s creative output.
