William the Conqueror are as inventive a three-piece as you’ll meet in any genre. Superb as usual and a pity they only had 31 minutes as the support to Bright Eyes. Better for being in the more intimate venue of the Project House rather than the O2…. I’ve seen W the C 3 or 4 times and they’re a really tight performing outfit with some great incisive songs, who can rock out in a bluesy Americana borderline celtic stylee given the opportunity.
Tho’ of course it meant ticket sales hadn’t been as good as projected which may be down to Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst trying too hard, not to live up to his humanity but to project that he is. He is liable to think he’s grunge’s Leonard Cohen (that’ll be Kurt Cobain, then), but he’s neither.
Parts of Bright Eyes set was very good but he got boo’ed for bringing up the right wing nature of the US Supreme Court - he’s not incorrect there but it was a surreal and dampening interlude on a couple of levels & some people (maybe) got the wrong end of the stick; or, maybe, don’t believe he’s being himself.
Ho-hum ….. Some think he doth protest too much. No such trouble working out where William the Conqueror are grounded !

Utterly epic! We'd planned a Christmas Market visit across Germany, and had planned to visit Cologne for the day, checked the music scene and found WtC were playing at The Yard Club, part of their European Tour 24! Having heard them on The Jo Willey Show on BBC radio 2 some years ago, we finally got to see them at the Green Door in Brighton after lockdown. They blew us away then.
And to see them in Cologne... made our holiday to be able to take my great mate Markus and introduce him to this fabulous music.

About William The Conqueror
Excuse Me While I Vanish
The new album, out now - https://wtc.lnk.to/emwivBT
William The Conqueror's fourth album finds the indie-rock trio firing on all cylinders as frontman Ruarri Joseph confronts the thin line between creativity and madness, inspired by compassion for the real-life angels of the world.
Produced by the band in a playground of vintage gear and mixed by Barny Barnicott (Arctic Monkeys, Sam Fender, Kasabian), the resulting album's ten tracks marry earworm tunes with insistent, imperious, soaring rock shapes, punctuated by chorus hooks that are simultaneously nuanced and anthemic.
Joseph's compelling semi-spoken vocals and swamp-blues-Seattle-scuzz guitars are propelled by the rhythm section of Naomi Holmes (bass) and Harry Harding (drums) as Excuse Me While I Vanish delivers an effortlessly winning blend of melody and ensemble dynamics, the most accomplished and undeniable William The Conqueror album to date.
