About Kerbside Collection
KERBSDIE COLLECTION ‘Jazz, Funk and Rare Groove’ ensemble from the inner suburbs of Brisbane/Australia. ‘A gritty rhythm section of old school drums and fender or upright bass, alongside funky hammond and rhodes, with some sweet George Benson-ish jazz guitar licks on top.’ Comprising members of various Brisbane ensembles, the band plays good time jazz, funk and traditional rare groove for listening or dancing. The sound harks back to the 60’s and 70’s Californian West Coast music of artists such as Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Chico Hamilton, Joe Sample and The Crusaders, whilst tipping its’ hat to today’s contemporaries keeping the ‘feel’ alive (Soulive, Bobby Hughes, James Taylor, Eddie Roberts & the New Mastersounds, Cookin on 3 Burners, Stance Brothers, Frootful, The Matson 2 etc). In May 2011, (after devastating floods freakishly ripped through their hometown of Brisbane) the ensemble went into the studio to record with Jake Mason (Cookin' on 3 Burners/Melb). Eight songs were recorded/mixed/pre-mastered in four days, on vintage, analogue gear and onto warm tape. The songs were tracked the old classic way - all members in one room playing together, with instruments bleeding into other instrument mics and amps (and no ‘click’!) to capture a full and lively sound from the players. In November that same year they released a self funded, limited edition 7” which included their gritty 'b-boy' funk version of Dizzy Gillespie’s ‘Night in Tunisia’, after which they were picked up by German Indie groove label 'Legere Recordings' who in May 2013 released the debut album ‘Mind the Curb’ alongside P-Vine Records in Japan. The release was also accompanied by another limited edition 7”, and a fun film clip for the lead single 'Cat Whip', all of which generated support from worldwide DJs, radio show hosts and tastemakers. 'Mind the curb Remixed & Reworked’ has just been released (August 2014) featuring a variety of remixes, reworks and reinterpretations from Renegades Of Jazz (Wass/Hiperbole/GER), Ennio Styles (Far Out/Irma/Raw Fusion/Stylin’/RRR radio Melb/AUS), Blunted Stylus (ex Resin Dogs/AUS), Billy Hoyle (BSTRD Boots/Melb/AUS), Chickashi Nishiwaki (Tree/JAP) and more, currently getting global support from the likes of Danny Krivit (US), Gilles Peterson (UK), Dom Servini (UK), Diesler (UK), Lance Ferguson The Bamboos/Double J/Aus), Wicked Jazz Sounds (Holland) and Lovemonk records (Spain). They're currently making the finishing touches to their second record which will be released early 2015 featuring special guests and recorded and engineered by Bob Knob (Hopestreet recordings/Melb). So far they’ve supported and played alongside The Kashmere Stage Band (US), The Cactus Channel (Melb), The Melodics (Melb), Jess Harlen & Plutonic (Melb), and headlined Brisbane’s ‘Home Fest’ in 2011 and 2012. "Some hefty funk out of Australia!" (Snowboy/Blues &Soul Mag- UK) “Tight instrumental jazz from from the Oz scene! Kerbside Collection stands out in a fertile scene thanks to lean, air tight edge that’s mightly impressive – but still nice and funky for the most part. Heavy drums and bass lines deliver the tenacious rhythm, thick layers of Hammond and Rhodes and some tasty guitar licks are at the core…” (Dusty Groove Records - Chicago/USA) "…Fat rhythms, Hammond organ or Rhodes piano, crisp funk bass ….and a guitarist who does not want to be the center of power….for fans of GEORGE BENSON…..absolutely fresh!!!" (Ohrenschmauch Radio Show - Germany) "An enjoyable listen!…Love the Night Tunisia version!" (Karsten John - Vinyl Vibes/ Germany) “Nice one Sirs!” (Dom Servini, Wah Wah 45s – UK) “Great music and good vibes!” (Dusty – Jazz & Milk Records – Germany) www.kerbside-collection.tumblr.com www.facebook.com/KerbsideCollection West Coast styled jazz funk and rare groove. A gritty rhythm section of old school drums and bass, funky Hammond/Rhodes with sweetly phrased guitar melodies ontop.
