MARINE FUTIN

Dazzling, energetic and truly refreshing. Here are the first adjectives that come to our minds when listening to Qui Danse, the first album of Marine Futin, singer, guitarist, composer - or rather singer-songwriter - based in Brooklyn, headquarters of the most prominent jazz musicians. And it is about jazz in the record with pop and folk influences, which is immediately apparent when hearing the embroidered aerial arrangements by musicians: Nir Felder and Gilad Hekselman on guitars, Ziv Ravitz on drums and Or Baraket on bass.

The thirteen tracks on the record were composed throughout the last decade, in France, in the US, in China or India, where she spent several weeks touring in 2011. But it is in the heart of the Big Apple that all her songs were refined with an irrepressible desire to imbue her music with a typical New York energy, as shown by the ternary pulse in "Alphabet" which, in seconds, transports you to the intersection of 7th Avenue and Christopher Street in the heart of Greenwich Village and Afro-American music.

As she arrived alone in the urban jungle, without special acquaintances in the limited world of jazz, it took her several years to bring together the people needed to sublimate her dense and rhythmically taut lyrics, like the title track "Qui Danse" which takes the form of a funk on which musicians improvise and revel, evidently.

Newcomer to the international Francophone pop scene, Marine Futin is part of a still rare lineage of singers who devote as much attention to their texts as their accompaniments. At a time when pop and French music abandon musicians for software and other beatbox machines, Marine wanted to prove that it is still possible in 2015 to compose an entire acoustic yet fundamentally modern repertoire.

Fulgurant, énergique et véritablement rafraîchissant. Voici les premiers adjectifs qui nous viennent à l’écoute de Qui Danse, tout premier album de Marine Futin, chanteuse, guitariste, compositrice — ou plutôt singer-songwriter — installée à Brooklyn, Q.G. des plus éminents jazzmen. Et il est question de jazz dans ce disque aux influences pop et folk, ce que l’on constate immédiatement à l’écoute des arrangements aériens que brodent les musiciens : Nir Felder et Gilad Hekselman aux guitares, Ziv Ravitz à la batterie et Or Baraket à la contrebasse.

Les treize titres présents sur le disque ont été composés au cours de ces dix dernières années, en France, en Chine, aux Etats-Unis ou encore en Inde, où elle est partie plusieurs semaines lors d’une tournée en 2011. Mais c’est au cœur de la Grosse Pomme que toutes ses chansons ont été peaufinées avec une envie irrépressible d’imprégner sa musique d’une énergie typiquement newyorkaise, comme le démontre la pulsation ternaire « d’Alphabet » qui, en quelques secondes, vous projette au croisement de la 7e avenue et de Christopher Street, au cœur de Greenwich Village et des musiques afro-américaines.

Arrivée seule dans la jungle urbaine, sans accointances particulières avec le milieu restreint du jazz, il lui aura fallu plusieurs années avant de réunir les personnes capables de sublimer ses textes denses et rythmiquement tendus, à l’image du morceau éponyme « Qui Danse », qui prend la forme d’un funk sur lequel les musiciens improvisent et s’amusent, à l’évidence.

Nouvelle venue sur la scène pop francophone internationale, Marine Futin s’inscrit dans une lignée toujours aussi rare des chanteuses qui attachent autant d’importance aux textes qu’aux accompagnements. A l’heure où la pop et la chanson française délaissent les musiciens pour des logiciels et autres boîtes à rythmes, Marine a voulu prouver qu’il est possible de composer en 2015 un répertoire totalement acoustique et fondamentalement moderne.
