About Circus Cult
Circus Cult is a rock and roll band in Colombo, Sri Lanka that knows how to have fun and get the party going. The rock and roll sound that the band is known for is an evolution of music over time and influences from different genres like rock, blues, electronic, folk, funk and metal brought in by each member of the band. Bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Winery Dogs, Wolfmother and Steven Wilson have also had a big influence on Circus Cult’s music over the years.
Unlike most other bands, Circus Cult had an unusual beginning. In 2010, the Lead Guitarist Bernard ‘the Ringmaster’ Botejue was looking to jam and have a few beers with some musicians over the weekends. These sessions always ended in a party. After two years of jamming with a variety of musicians and also some craziness along the way, ‘The Jester’ Lead Vocalist Germaine Fernando walked in for a jam one day and suggested that we should start playing for concerts as well. With that, the seed was planted and the ‘Gigging Era’ kicked off. Circus Cult used to play in different clubs and pubs around Colombo to a growing audience; the rock movement of Sri Lanka.
It wasn’t until 2013 when Drummer Kasun Pathirana aka ‘The Clown’ joint that the band decided that they needed a simple groovy back beat to hold the song together and take the music forward. Bassist Riyal Riffai, ‘The Knife Thrower’ and Guitarist Scheherazade Asmone, ‘The Illusionist’ joint the band in 2014 and solidified the lineup.
Circus Cult has achieved a few milestones along the way such as being on TV and Radio as well as being featured in many articles. The biggest highlight came with the release of the two debut singles ‘The Freak Show’ and ‘Rollercoaster’. Both songs were picked up and played on the local radio stations and have also received over a thousand hits on Sound Cloud
Presently Circus Cult is busy working on their debut album ‘Runaway and join the Circus’ while also collaborating with a European band to release a song on a compilation album with other bands from around the world.
The Future is a bright long road ahead for the band, with the planned release of their Debut album towards the end of the year. The desire to gain a wider audience from across the world has pushed Circus Cult to build up an interesting and interactive online presence with videos, photos and live concert feeds.
