About Nidarosdomens Guttekor

The Nidaros Cathedral Boys’ Choir has over 900 years of rich history. It’s the main choir of Nidaros Cathedral which is located in the ancient capital of Trondheim, Norway. It’s also the main choir of Royal events.

The choir will celebrate its 100 years of modern history in 2027 with a global tour.

Current artistic director and conductor, Bjørn Moe - a former soprano in the choir, successfully reinvented the choir since joining as conductor in 1973.

There are 100 members in the main choir, 70 sopranos/altos (9-15 years old) and 30 tenors/basses (15-68 years old). In addition, the mini-boys choir, has 40 boys ages 7-9.

Apart from religious repertoire, the choir also sings Norwegian folk songs as well as songs from different cultures around the world. Each year the Choir collaborates with orchestras to present large scaled compositions.

The Cathedral was built between 1070-1320. During the construction, priests would teach the sons of stonemasons Gregorian chants for Mass services, thus creating over 900 years of choral tradition.

Boys in the Choir’s treble group are selected from 15 schools in greater Trondheim areas. Teenagers and adults also started out in the treble group. It’s a long journey but rich in rewards.

Complete devotion and passion to sing, with determination and full support of their families, are the driving forces to rehearsals 3-4 times a week. Whether snowing or sunny, long day at work or school, the singers show up to sing, ready for new challenges.

The Choir is not a boarding school, therefore, singers’ families must sacrifice their vacations so the Choir can tour further away from home.

It is not out of obligation nor requirement, but with devotion and passion that the singers are able to bring out the angelic voices.

It is the years of being together, growing, respecting each other, that the adults are able to mentor the young and the young look up to the adults. It’s a warm and lage family of singers.

It is over 900 years of rich tradition and heritage that nurtured this celebration of the pure and beautiful treble voices with the deep and mature men’s voices. Together the angelic sound of the Nidaros Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys are created and continues to touch people’s hearts around the world.
