About The Sly Foxes
The Sly Foxes are a funk/rock band from West Chester, Pa consisting of Doug Myers, (guitar/vocals), Arturo DiPietro (bass guitar/vocals), James Jorgensen (saxophone), Timmy Oakes (piano/keyboards) and Dennis Oakes (drums).
Guitarists Doug Myers and Arturo DiPietro met in 2013 while attending West Chester University. After finding they shared a passion for playing guitar and a love of R&B/funk artists Otis Redding, Ray Charles and James Brown, the two began playing acoustic guitar together. One jam session at Arturo’s house intrigued close friend and drummer Dennis Oakes and the three decided they would form a band.
The musicians started working together in an empty 9’ by 9’ chicken coop. They played local house parties under several names and pseudonyms, until they decided on "The Sly Foxes", after the fox which had eaten the chickens from the coop in which they practiced.
To emulate the desired R&B/funk sound, Doug purchased a Kimball organ on craigslist, and kept it in the coop. Dennis' younger brother Timmy Oakes, wanting to be part of the band, joined as piano/keyboardist.
Sly Foxes' recorded material frequently involved horn lines, which were usually overdubbed by Doug. The Foxes completed their live sound by adding longtime friend and fan of the band, saxophonist James Jorgensen.
The band began to gig in and around Pennsylvania. This included festivals often requiring them to play a specific genre including blues, reggae, acoustic, and funk. By playing a diverse array of genres, the Foxes were able to develop a unique sound that is entirely their own. One such festival at the Moondancer Winery, the band was introduced to artist rep Lynda Bennett of world renown roots label Lanark records.
Lynda introduced the Foxes to rockabilly hall of famer/label owner Quentin Jones. The Foxes and Jones agreed to do a four song EP with Jones behind the board as producer as he has done with artists such as Robert Gordon, Lynda Gail Lewis, and Kenley Collins.
With the EP “Cooped Up” under their belt, the Foxes are setting up touring dates for 2017 in support of their EP and album.
