Ataah Abaiko Azah (born June 17, 1996), known professionally as Ataah King, is an American businessman, record producer, software developer, songwriter, and vocalist who was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He is known professionally as Ataah King, but also goes by the mononym Ataah. Ataah rose to prominence in 2014 with the release of his mixtape titled "Senioritis" which came immediately before his enrollment at St. John's University in Jamaica Queens, New York City.
Prior to "Senioritis," Ataah garnered attention with two demo projects: "The Cure" [2012], recorded in South Korea, and "Off Season" [2013], which was crafted while attending Indian River Central High School in Philadelphia, New York.
Early life:
Ataah Azah was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Benjamen Azah, an American veteran and founder of Bonazah Community Development of Africa (BOCODA), a non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement and development of Africa, and Judith Azah, a rehabilitation counselor and public relations specialist.
Growing up in a household that valued both philanthropy and community engagement, Ataah was inspired by his parents' commitment to making a positive impact. Their influence instilled in him a sense of social responsibility and a desire to use his musical talents to effect change.
During his early years, Ataah's family relocated to Daegu, South Korea. It was in Daegu that Ataah continued to nurture his passion for music and collaborate with fellow artists. He became an integral part of the vibrant music scene and began releasing music under the collective known as Daegu Recording Artists. This collaborative environment provided Ataah with valuable opportunities to expand his creative horizons and refine his artistic voice.
The multicultural experiences gained from living in both Atlanta and Daegu greatly influenced Ataah's musical style and perspective. The diverse cultural backgrounds and influences he encountered during his formative years shaped his artistic identity, infusing his music with a unique blend of global sounds and storytelling.
Ataah's early life was marked by a strong foundation of social awareness, artistic exploration, and cross-cultural experiences. These influences would go on to shape his future musical endeavors and establish him as a dynamic and socially conscious artist.
Musical career:
In 2010 Ataah began crafting his first cover EP, titled "The Enrollment" while still living in Richmond, Virginia. This project showcased his versatility as an artist, featuring covers of popular records such as "I Love Them Ho's" by Eamon, "Everybody Knows" by John Legend, and "Misery Business" by Paramore. Ataah uploaded the EP to platforms like MySpace and ReverbNation, allowing his classmates to digitally stream his music.
At the young age of 16, while still attending high school in Philadelphia, New York, Ataah embarked on his musical journey by signing a single-album distribution deal with the Oklahoma-based record label, Tate Music Group. Through Tate Music Group Ataah released his debut album "The Reign", which due to his lack of understanding of how the music industry worked, resulted in low sales and was converted from a physical product to a digital product available for streaming through platforms like Spotify. Despite his shortcomings, this early opportunity allowed him to showcase his talent and gain exposure within the industry.
Known for his animated flow, sharp humor, and stylistic range, Ataah quickly began carving his own path in the music scene. During his time with the collective known as Daegu Recording Artists, based in Daegu, South Korea, Ataah continued to develop his skills and release new music. His second demo EP, "Secrets, Lies, and Regrets" (also referred to as "SLR1"), showcased his growth as an artist, delving into introspective themes and displaying his evolving lyrical prowess.
Additionally, Ataah released an EP titled "The Cure," inspired by J. Cole's single of the same name. This project further demonstrated his ability to captivate listeners with his storytelling abilities and captivating melodies. Throughout his musical career, Ataah has constantly pushed boundaries, combining his unique style, sharp lyrics, and dynamic delivery to create a sound that resonates with audiences worldwide.
After teaming up with Wilkins Port, a Miami-based music publisher, in 2014 for the release of Senioritis, Ataah joined AWAL in 2017, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment and Kobalt Music Group. However, due to his dissatisfaction with the final production quality of his projects, he made the decision to remove all of his music from streaming platforms. This unexpected move sparked curiosity among friends and fans, who began wondering about his whereabouts and the whereabouts of the highly appreciated "Senioritis."
In response to the growing inquiries, Ataah released a dual single titled "Slow Dancing / Wasn't Mine" in late 2018. The tracks delved into his personal growth as a public figure, while also exploring the delicate balance of his personal relationships. Shortly after its release, Ataah encountered legal troubles, facing an arrest while driving back to New York during winter break after transferring to Columbus State University in Georgia just one semester prior to graduation. This unfortunate incident further delayed his full-time return to music.
While Ataah has since re-released some of his previous work, including another dual single in mid-2022 titled "I Didn't Know It Was over I'm Slurred," he has yet to make his official comeback.
Currently associated with AWAL, Ataah King's dedicated fan base eagerly awaits his next move—anticipating the artist's future endeavors and the mark he will undoubtedly leave on the entertainment industry.
