About Black Gardenia
Black Gardenia is a different kind of vintage jazz band. Their exploration of the mysterious place where jazz, blues, folk and old country meet has yielded a sound that takes listeners to a time and place where cool was always classy and noir was the norm. The band’s second album, Lucky Star, blends reinterpreted classics with vintage-inspired originals, with an all-star line-up of musical talent refining their distinct sound to deliver their finest work yet.
Daphne has been profiled on CBC Radio, on Shaw TV and The Province, Vancouver Sun, Georgia Straight, Ukulele Magazine, Monte Cristo Magazine, Vancouver Magazine, The Vancouver Courier, The Source. On Lucky Star her captivating vocals have been paired with the talents of her musical (and life) partner, guitarist Andrew Smith, along with stellar musicians including Chris Davis (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings), Paul Pigat (Cousin Harley), Stephen Nikleva and Jimmy Roy (Ray Condo and the Ricochets and Petunia and the Vipers), Cameron Wilson and Brent Gubbels (VanDjango), and Patrick Metzger (Headwater, Viper Central).
“For me, Black Gardenia’s Lucky Star is the perfect musical cocktail. I’ll have mine vintage with a twist!” -Daphne Roubini

Praise for Black Gardenia and 'Lucky Star':
“Daphne Roubini's original tunes bring to mind Django Reinhardt’s Gypsy Jazz with Billie Holiday as vocalist.” Vancouver Sun
"Transporting listeners back to a time of martinis, lounge suits, and hazy cigarette smoke... the fact that Roubini's originals are indistinguishable among the stacked line-up is the biggest compliment of all" Georgia Straight
“Here we find what it would have sounded like if prime Billie Holiday hooked up with the Hot Club for a one off that wound up setting the sky on fire. An utterly smoking journey through a past that never was, this is how you polish a stone into a gem. Killer stuff throughout.” Midwest Record
"The musical equivalent of taking a bath in a barrel of finely aged bourbon.” Robert Collins CTV BC
“This Jazz/country/folk/blues band filter everything they do through their own special musical time capsule.” North Shore News
"With her meticulous approach and spare proficiency, Roubini delivers an interesting lyrical narrative." Audiophile Audition
