Disco Dust

Matt grew up in Austin had been singing and playing guitar in some depressing—and some rather Zolofty—rock bands throughout high school. A native Angeleno, Bryan spent his formative years cutting his teeth on funk and fusion drumming until they became fangs. Off at college at USC, the two met through mutual friends who were organizing a psychedelic soul band that shied away from any song under seven minutes in length. Up to this point, the two had been making music in different areas of the local music scene. Matt had released two albums performing with proggy-rock P.S. Nevermind, dragging friends and friends of friends for years to shows for "this band with this stupid name". Bryan held a position as a ranking officer in USC's most feared co-ed fraternity: the USC Trojan Marching Band. This opened the door of opportunity to perform with Radiohead at the Grammy's. Other doors were opened as well but what happens in Vegas— Post-college, the two remained friends as each pursued separate DJ careers. Bryan played as a hired gun in another band with a silly band name. Meanwhile Matt was rejected by the Blue Man Group on account of his lack of baldness, an expressionless face, and drumming talent. Not to mention he was beginning to feel like an aspiring actor twiddling knobs and playing recordings for parties, despite how much fun it is to do so. Voicing shared concerns about the easily impersonal nature of DJing, the two decided to make an electronic music group that would perform live—with real live instruments—as well as sample and DJ. Blending some gleefully primal ass-knocking bass with the emotional immediacy of live vocals and instrumentation, the duo found themselves able to both release remixes and original material, as well as covers that fall somewhere in between the two categories. Excitedly and apparently unaware a better-known French DJ duo was already trying to make this point about electronic music in general—Disco Dust set to making dance music as human as possible.
