Sitting at the top of one of the most recognizable cities in the state is Detroit. The Motor City gave rise to the automobile assembly line and mass production that drove America into freedom on the road. Just 25 minutes outside of Detroit, is the city limits of Pontiac, MI, GM’s Pontiac East Assembly plant produced some of the greatest muscle cars of the time in the GTO and Firebird Trans-Am. For Deshawn Grady… AKA Trigg Da Kidd, the historical tales of Pontiac is nothing new to him. Taught the history of the city in grade and high school was mandatory, but at home in his neighborhood of South Side, the rules of the streets were detrimental for survival. Born in Kingston, North Carolina, Trigg Da Kidd was uprooted from the Tar Heel state and sent to live with his grandmother as a young kid. It was here that he found the love for hip-hop. “I started rapping when I was around twelve - thirteen years old but got really serious about it as a career around when I was sixteen. I consider Lil Wayne and Biggie as some of my influences.” It was around this time that he and his childhood friends and fellow emcees FuCo Bunkin, (pronounced: “Foo Co”) and Sir Roc decided to create a rap group called G-Ville. However, before the journey into pursuing hip-hop as a career could get off the ground, Trigg was sent to juvenile detention in March 2010 for some shady activities. Being sent away was a learning experience that would only help his drive to do something with his life a top priority upon getting out. “People who don’t know about Pontiac, won’t understand… but due to the close proximity, Pontiac is like a mini Detroit. Everything that went down in Detroit, it went down in Pontiac. The selling of drugs and all that happens here too. So it’s not hard to get caught up out here.” After getting out of detention in January 2011, Trigg came out ready to make up for lost time. Trigg quickly picked up the pen and traced thoughts to paper. Those rhymes on yellow loose leaf would form the basis for his mixtape Trigganometry 101 hosted by DJ Scream. The project was release on September 25, 2012 and featured records with Travis Porter and Doughboyz. 2012 was a hustle year for Trigg filled with many firsts and promises. To start, he was a part of 2 Chainz Based On A True Story Tour II that allowed him to learn some things from the famous emcee. “The 2 Chainz tour was my first national tour. It was a blessing from God being on tour with one of the hottest dudes in the game. That situation was a good learning experience because I was able to watch and learn a lot from him like how he gets the crowd involved.” Along with the tour, Trigg considers his video “What’s Yo Name” being played on MTV Jams as one of the biggest highlights of his career thus far but knows there’s more to come. Trigg Da Kidd expects that his hard work and music will soon catch the attention of the general public soon enough. As long as he keeps moving forward, the opportunity he’s been waiting for to break open will come. “I would be unrealistic to say that I will be rapping forever, but right now I have goals set for achieving success. “It’s a fight but I won’t quit because I love what I’m doing and what I’ve learned in pursuing this is that people depend on me not always for money, but inspiration too.
