About My Pet Monster

From the Bay Area underground, a monster was born. What could easily be called the United States ‘Mecca’ of Bass Music at the time, My Pet Monster bared witness to the early soundscapes that painted the walls of dimly lit warehouses and nightclubs with their raw and gritty forms throughout the West Coast in the late 2000s. He had a front row seat to witness pioneers of the genre; who laid the foundation for not only his knowledge but also his understanding of the craftsmanship involved. Through this baptism arose an artist driven by passion not only to create immersive music and performances but also a commitment to constant experimentation and artistic growth.

Hailing originally from Kansas City where he now resides, My Pet Monster is a resident DJ, producer, engineer, and educator. The artist, whose real name is Ryan Summers, began songwriting at an early age but didn’t discover electronic music until his early-twenties. His love for punk and metal quickly morphed into an obsession for grimey bass lines and nasty beats. After earning dual degrees in Business and Music from Santa Clara University, he pursued certification in Audio Engineering and Music Production at Pyramind which solidified his technical knowledge and expertise in the field.

Over the years, My Pet Monster has crossed multiple genres, putting his new school spin on many classic eras of American music such as jazz, blues, swing, funk, hip hop, and soul. After returning from a recent hiatus, he has since reconnected with his roots to create and perform darker, more provocative Experimental Bass music. What has rang true throughout all of his creations is to expect the unexpected.

My Pet Monster has musical releases on many established record labels such as Westwood Recordings, Adapted Records, Street Ritual, and MalLabel Music (to name a few) and has earned critical acclaim with multiple singles charting on the Beatport TOP 100.

His contributions to the music scene have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by winning the 2012 San Francisco RAW Musician of the Year Award with his former music collective, Deep City Culture, and receiving a 2018 preliminary co-nomination with Grid Division from the Television Academy for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for their work on 'Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television'.

His touring career has taken him across the continental US, performing at renowned music festivals like Electric Forest, Burning Man, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Roaring City, The Pirate Party, How Weird Street Faire, The Edwardian Ball, San Diego Comic Con, Emissions, Theatre Bizarre, and BottleRock.

He has shared stages with music icons such as Diplo, DJ Shadow, Del The Funky Homosapien, Dan The Automator, Beats Antique, G Jones, Ganja White Night, The Funk Hunters, Krafty Kuts, Justin Martin, DJ Icey, Big Gigantic, Tsuruda, Dirt Monkey, Charles The First, Yheti, ill.Gates, Defunk, Fort Knox Five, SoDown, Stylust, Minnesota, Buku, LSDREAM, The Polish Ambassador, and many more.
