About Jenuine Cello
“My favorite sound is the silence in between the beats. That’s what I would want to be remembered for in this era of constant humming." -me Austin, TX - Jenuine Cello, aka Jen Mulhern, is a captivating model of a modern one-woman band. Her live compositions take listeners on a road trip free from genre, saturated with an array of influences. With undercurrents of Bach, Bjork and everything in between, her music combines classically-infused inspiration with raw textures to create a unique sound of layered soulful puzzle pieces. Equipped with her Siamese twin-the cello, plus a beat-up looping pedal, a 6-string alien-looking electric cello and knack for glitchy self-made beats, Jen Mulhern creates a symphony of spontaneous sound painting that pulls at the soul and awakens an ancient desire to howl at the moon... About me: I picked the cello when I was eleven. I couldn't stop experimenting with the possibilities of my new language. I tape recorded duets with myself and tried to learn Nirvana power chords, played Depeche Mode melodies by ear and made up songs in between private lessons and orchestra rehearsals. People are often excited to see the electric cello in my setup and are quick to ask me what effects I use. Honestly-I think most effects make the cello sound like an electric guitar. And if I wanted to sound like a guitar, I think I would have just tried to learn to play the guitar! But it's mesmerizing to try to create a language of textures and sounds that use the natural effects that you can create with the bow and acoustics of the cello. The only effect I use involves my looping pedal, which enables me to clone myself and create a one-woman cello army. Who doesn't love that? Lush, rich cello textures looped and layered to paint the world inside my head.
