About Gorse

Gorse is a heavy three-piece band from Brighton UK, formed in 2008. After a couple of years with changing line-ups, guitar/vocalist James Parker (ex Hey Colossus) and bassist Olly Thomas (ex-Gilamonsters) met Jennie Howell (ex-From Beneath It Devours and The Black Neck Band of the Common Loon) thanks to a tip off from a friend, Ash (drummer with the late, great Charlottefield). Jennie brought a jazz-influenced but hard-hitting style and cemented a new sound. Reinvigorated, Gorse began writing collaboratively with resulting album Old Certainties released in 2011 on Waitstock Productions, followed in 2013 by Twisting Nature which was released independently by the band. Gorse’s first release was an extended EP, Slumber Of Artemis (Calculon, 2009), followed swiftly by a stop-gap CD/download album Bovine Soul (I Made This, 2009). This opening salvo of fifteen tracks garnered attention in a range of media, from underground stoner/doom-orientated websites to mainstream rock mags. “There’s a grace to the measured, monumental riffing and spiky discordance on offer here... an album that engages the brain and gut alike.” – Slumber Of Artemis review, Kerrang! “This EP is a fucking masterpiece. Noise-rock, doom and melody have rarely combined into a sound so deep and organic.” – Slumber Of Artemis review, Hellride “A worthy addition to the growing ranks of fuzzy-edged, riff-mangling weirdos.” – Bovine Soul review, Rocksound "Still throughout the clattering din fragmented guitar melodies have a memorable impact, and a skyward post-rock aesthetic helps to alleviate the aggressiveness of the band’s minor-chord, migraine rock."
