About Taking the Hourglass

Taking the Hourglass was started in 2012 by long-time friends Ilseuk and Rachel, when just college and work just weren't quite enough in life anymore. Inspired by musicians who poured their heart and their soul into their music, Ilseuk and Rachel sought to do the same thing; to take a little bit of their experiences, their questions, and maybe even some answers, and channel them into music. Who knew, maybe some people would like it. Since then, (to make a long story short) they've been joined by different band members, recorded the Lost for Words EP, met a ton of great people, shared the stage with a bunch of great bands, and gotten to travel all across the country playing music. Landing in Omaha, NE after getting married, they were joined by Ben Conrad, Dolan Delano, and Cole Johnson, and have grown as musicians, as a band, and as individuals. It's been a heck-of-a-time growing up.

Taking the Hourglass' sound was developed as a combination of the different musical tastes of our members. Rachel being into artists like Colbie Caillat, Mumford and Sons and the like, and Ilseuk being into bands like Underoath and Switchfoot, they naturally had a learning curve in figuring out how to make music together. But being best friends and having similar goals for life and music, they stuck it through and figured it out. Rachel was an accomplished singer, which fueled the desire to pursue music a little more seriously than before. But Ilseuk joined her with little more than a love for music and a splash of experience on a couple different instruments. He originally planned on being the drummer for the group, but quickly found that when you're starting out covering songs at open mics as a duet, a guitar is a whole lot more useful, so the switch happened pretty quickly. He didn't have much experience singing either, but an extra vocalist goes a long way, so that was explored as well. After spending some time playing covers and getting used to that, it was time to get on to writing some original stuff. Neither of them had experience writing songs, so the list of things to learn as a band expanded.

The list of the things to learn never really stopped expanding, but such is life, right? Armed with the right people in your life and the desire to keep on learning, the adventure never gets too hard. So Taking the Hourglass is looking forward to a future full of family, work, play, and music. The adventure never stops.
