Small Axe Brooklyn

Formed as emcee Roch's backing band for his solo material in September 2010, Small Axe played their first gig ever on the Van's Warped Tour in the summer of 2011 in the company of Shinobi Ninja and Green Jelly, among others. Since then they have blown away unsuspecting audiences around Bed-Stuy and elsewhere in Brooklyn/NYC at The Gramercy Theater, The Paper Box, Sullivan Hall, Cameo Gallery, FreeCandy, Trash Bar, and Legion, as well as various parties and weddings(?!?) Small Axe will be performing at the upcoming 2013 AfroPunk Festival at Cmdr Barry Park in Fort Greene, thanks to their hard-hitting show-stopper of a performance in the semi-finals of the 2012 AfroPunk Battle of the Bands. Presently writing and recording for their debut LP with new drummer Sydney Driver (John Forte, Blitz the Ambassador, etc) this band WILL BE HEARD. Small Axe's influences range from Bad Brains and the Deftones to Tupac and Outkast to Bob Marley and Funkadelic and Jimi Hendrix. Unlike most bands who say they are influenced by great artists like these and then sound like whoever's charting in the L Magazine, you can actually hear these sounds in Small Axe, colored with their special boot-in-the-eye distortion. Maybe it's because they are two Bay-Area natives, a guitar-slinger from the island of Guam, and a no-nonsense born-and-raised barber from Bed-Stuy, but it's impossible to pin these guys down. "I've never heard a band like this and I LOVE it" is becoming de rigeur feedback after shows. Small Axe!
