About Mitra Sumara

Yvette Massoudi is a singer, bandleader, and producer who breathes new life and energy into classic songs to create music that transcends time.

In her project, Mitra Sumara, Yvette reshapes 60s/70s Iranian pop into contemporary funk and psychedelic tunes. Mitra Sumara made its mark with debut album Tahdig (Persian Cardinal, 2018), lauded as “rollicking Farsi Funk” (John Schaefer NPR) and “groovy, boundary-breaking” (PopMatters), and became part of the NYC-based international floating party Disco Tehran. Mitra Sumara returns with Dream (Persian Cardinal, 2023), a brand-new collection of retro Persian hits that brings everyone to the dance floor with jazz-infused dance-groove arrangements of beloved international classics that harken to a bygone era of freedom and progress in Iran.

Half-Iranian by birth and adopted by American parents, Yvette’s lifelong search for her Iranian birth father and her personal and cultural identity eventually led her to an Iranian expatriate website showcasing immigrant stories, poetry, and nostalgic videos of 60s and 70s Iranian pop stars’ on TV. She was enthralled with this music, which blended Latin percussion and brass, Italian and Brazilian pop sensibilities, orchestrated strings, Iranian beats, and middle eastern melodies, performed by beguiling singers in psychedelic studio sets that harkened back to the American variety shows of her youth.

Foraging for these recordings at a small Iranian grocery in NYC, or on Westwood Blvd on occasional trips back to Los Angeles, felt like a deep dive into her own hidden identity. Yvette found her birth father in 2009 and began to study Persian language and music more seriously.

Yvette is a recipient of the 2022 NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music, and Theater grant, to support the production of Mitra Sumara’s new album, Dream. Mitra Sumara is the culmination of years of searching for her lost family and culture. It’s a celebration of community and connection; a tribute to the vibrancy of Persian culture and the freedom Iranian women and artists once enjoy
