Borderline
April 21st 2017
Upfront it has to be said that I am a huge fan of Henrik Freischlader and have in the past travelled a very long way to see him live. I think he is one of the most talented and accomplished blues guitarist of his generation, if not ever. Henrik continues to change at an alarming rate. Last year, after a long absence, on the same Borderline stage there were only three musicians. Back to the (Blues) roots was the flavour then. This year these were eight people on the same (tiny) stage! In the meantime he did the blues for Gary album and tour which I sadly missed especially when he shared the stage with Matt Schofield. This year’s band contained a mix of hugely talented musicians and a very different set from the previous Freischlader gigs I have attended. I am an old blues fan and my expectation was quite different but this does not mean that I didn’t enjoy the gig. Instead of the usual set of original Freischlader Blues Rock, the audience were treated to an eclectic mix of original material from the artists on stage and a number of covers. The styles ranged from Rock to Soul and from Bluegrass to Jazz, from Stevie Wonder to Hendrix and Marley. For me, there was a little too much going on, on that stage at times and the band never quite managed to capture the (quite poor and raucous) audience. Unusually for the Borderline the quality of the sound was poor as well. The legendary solo work that I love so much was largely but not entirely absent but was revealed in all its glory during the penultimate song and brilliant Bob Marley cover. Then the audience was finally listening rather than chatting and I had the feeling that this is what they came to see. I guess Henrik is still searching for his next challenge and this is part of his journey. I really want to see this set again because now I know what to expect; next time maybe somewhere in Germany. Anyway, I still enjoyed the gig with a couple of exceptions, which were largely out of Henrik’s control. There is only one god; his mother****ing name? Henrik Freischlader.
