About Cass Brostad
Cass grew up on the mean streets of small town Nebraska, singing at church and banging on pianos. She happened to have a pretty amazing family made of musicians, accountants, school teachers, and soldiers. They gave her a guitar and put an awful lot of words in her head. She grew up playing bluegrass at the feet of her yodeling Grandfather and the best "cool uncle" Wayne a girl could ask for. These remain the loudest and best people she knows. She grew up a little and graduated college with a degree in Writer's Workshop from University of Nebraska, Omaha where she learned even more words. She played bass and sang in a blues band called The 5150's for many years before she figured out that words + guitar = songwriter. Sometimes it's the small things that just blow your mind. She started writing songs about three years ago and formed Cass Fifty and the Family Gram and picked up some wayward accordion techniques. She also started playing loud mouth and various instruments in Travelling Mercies. These were good times. But eventually, she got a little tired of cold winters and decided to pack up and move herself down to Austin, Texas. Where she does much of the same. Only now, she's just a lot warmer. Also, she occasionally refers to herself in the third person for the sake of band biographies. Life ain't bad.
