österreich was ultimately conceived in the aftermath of the dissolution of the cabs in early 2013. The band's dissolution, which came as a result of Takahashi's "laziness" and mental health issues, ultimately became the catalyst that allowed for Takahashi to break out on his own.

The music can be described as Post-Rock, math rock, Alternative, Emo, New Age, Minimal pop, Electronica or Post classical.

February 27, 2013: the cabs announced their disbandment.

December 25, 2014: Following an offer from manga artist Sui Ishida, Takahashi announced that he would publicly begin making music under the name österreich.

March 4, 2015: Released “Muno”, the opening theme for episodes 1–11 of the anime Tokyo Ghoul √A. Guest vocals were provided by Ai Kamano (ex. ハイスイノナサ/Haisuinonasa).

October 1, 2015: Provided the song “Zeitakuna Hone” as the theme song for the PS Vita game Tokyo Ghoul JAIL. Guest vocals were again by Ai Kamano.

December 12, 2018: Released “Rakuen no Kimi”, the ending theme for episodes 13 through the final episode of the anime Tokyo Ghoul:re. The recording featured Takahashi on guitar, guest vocals by Mizuki Iida (cinema staff), drums by Daigo Yamaguchi (People In The Box), and chorus by Ai Kamano.

March 27, 2019: Contributed “Rakuen no Kimi (Acoustic ver.)” to the compilation album Tokyo Ghoul AUTHENTIC SOUND CHRONICLE Compiled by Sui Ishida.

August 15, 2019: Announced affiliation with Perfect Music Inc.

October 3, 2019: The first live performance of österreich took place at STUDIO COAST in Shin-Kiba, appearing as a guest act at TK from Ling Tosite Sigure’s event “Bi-Phase Brain ‘L side’”.

March 13, 2020: Held the first self-produced event, “Ikudome ka no Saigo”, at Shindaita FEVER, with Tatsuya Kitani as a guest.

June 26, 2020: Released the mini-album Shishi.

April 30, 2021: Performed the first solo live show, österreich presents Shishi no Bunmyaku Live Streaming.

June 24, 2022: Released the mini-album Itai.

December 17, 2025: Released the single Domino no otsuge.

Since then österreich tours and participates in events and festivals.
