About Lucas Penner
If you were to try and describe to your friends what it might sound like if Bon Iver walked into a private jazz club, and hopped up on stage to freestyle a tune with Tom Waits, well, all you’d need to do is tell them to stop what they’re doing and go listen to Lucas Penner.
Fearlessly bending genres-living somewhere between accessible and alternative-Canadian solo artist Lucas Penner is as captivating as he is curious. Having traveled all across the country, writing and releasing music since 2012, and working with producers like Alex Purcll (Claire Hunter, Brian Corbett) and Jesse Gander (Pack AD, Japandroids), Penner’s constant evolution and artistic integrity ages perfectly alongside him. Whether it’s engaging his audience with a folk break up ballad, or holding the room in the palm of his hand with an acoustic rap jam, Penner keeps us on our toes and thoroughly enraptured at all times.
His debut EP “Passerby” was released in 2012, followed by his sophomore EP “Honey Baby” in 2020, and a stream of singles in 2022, closing the door on years of experimentation before attempting to write a record. Now, having refined his sound-synthesizing everything he's learned and still aims to achieve- Penner’s debut album “Roots Through The Cracks” has finally come to fruition. Set for release in 2023, he will once again show us that there is no boundary that can’t be pushed, all the while weaving a continuous thread of himself through the whole album. A man of many faces, Penner brings out his whole arsenal and masterfully delivers a tapestry of jazz, folk, soft rock, post punk, and so much more.
Whether you’re a fan of Elliot Smith, Frank Sinatra (or Zappa), Lucas Penner will have something for you to sink your teeth into.
