About FoundNation

Some people jokingly say FoundNation is the token Catholic group on the Christian rap scene. We like to think of ourselves as the Catholic rap version of Wu-Tang Clan or NWA, except we aren't joking, lol. Seriously though, who has even heard of Catholic rap? Is it authentic hip-hop? Is it authentically Catholic? Are Catholics even Christian? And why are these dudes so obsessed with tacos (true story)? Let's answer these questions. FoundNation consists of five rappers in three states; C2six (Fort Worth, TX), Nico Santana (Tampa, FL), Separate M1nd (Houston, TX by way of Santa Ana, CA), John Levi (Tampa, FL) and Val Mural (Escondido, CA). Each of the artists had their own experience in the hip-hop world prior to a reversion to their Catholic faith. Their experiences ranged from C2six being a successful gangsta rapper, working and touring with acts such as Bone Thugs N Harmony and Cypress Hill, to John Levi working security for some of the most prominent hip-hop acts such as Eminem and 50 Cent. A passion for recording and performing hip-hop was something they all had in common and something they did well. At some point in time though, they all recognized there is something bigger and more substantial that was missing. They had each strayed away from their Catholic faith. Hip-hop, by itself, could not fill the void. The answer was not to abandon hip-hop, rather to utilize it for a greater purpose. A genuine and authentic hip-hop sound came naturally. Since the formation of the group, FoundNation was associated with a rapping priest from Richmond, CA named Father Masseo Gonzales (also known as El Padrecito). El Padrecito has served as the group's spiritual guide and El Padrecito Ministries has served as an unofficial record label. The content of their music distinguished FoundNation from other Christian rap acts. No one in Christian hip-hop had made songs about the Virgin Mary or the sacraments prior to this time. Everything about FoundNation screamed "CATHOLIC!" It made perfect sense to call their music "Catholic rap". Initially, there was some uncertainty about how Christian hip-hop fans would react, but the responses have been overwhelmingly positive. FoundNation successfully merged orthodox Catholicism with their authentic hip-hop sound. By distinguishing themselves as Catholic rappers, FoundNation became the “go-to” hip-hop group for major Catholic events. They have toured consistently throughout the US in major cities such as Los Angeles, New York & Houston. Some of the more notable events include World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, El Congresso de Jovenes in Los Angeles, and Catholic Underground in New York City. The taco question in the intro was kind of tongue in cheek, but FoundNation never turns down good tacos. In, fact if you would like to book FoundNation for a concert or for speaking engagements they would love for you to take them to the best taco spot in your city after the event. God bless!
