The Great Novel

The Great Novel is a folk band from Montreal that combines roots instruments with a rock and roll mindset. Endrick Tremblay (lead vocal, guitar, harmonica, words) MarcOlivier Tremblay Drapeau ( vocals) Guillaume Reboux ( vocals) Gregory FitzGerald (drums and vocals) Gabrièle Côté (vocals and percussion) They had been playing music together for a while. It had been a few months since they started calling themselves The Great Novel. Still, it took a journey to find the perfect standup bass for them to become a band. An initiatory road that involved getting lost in Boston, drinking Bourbon in Greenwich Village, feeling blissful in Chelsea, fighting off rats in Manhattan, and so much more as yet untold. They came back changed, more inspired than ever by the words and worlds of Kerouac, Twain and Allen. They did the only thing it seemed right to do: they took their instruments, chewed Bazooka gum and shared a prolific creativity that led to their first album Ain’t too pretty. The album (co-produced by Dany Placard and released in May 2013) charted on the Earshot National folk/roots top 10 for 3 weeks, and remained for 6 weeks in the folk top 10 of CIBL. After this journey through creativity came the time to expose the words and the moments to sing them, the crazy encounters in the Montreal arts community, the sharing and cheering, the card games they played backstage, in cheap hotel rooms, in a green van, in coffee shops, in bars—they really love card games—and the musical road they were meant travel, playing over 50 shows in 2013. Only one year after ‘Ain’t to pretty’ they are set to release their follow up EP ‘Buffalo Trace’ on June 3rd a record inspired by whisky and friendship. They are also composing a theme for a show about Jack Kerouac at Radio-Canada. This summer the band will hit the road with Greg McEvoy to explore Eastern Canada, from Windsor to the Atlantic, where they look forward to many more shared experiences worthy of writing about. ---- Ils jouaient de la musique depuis un temps déjà. Ils s’appelaient même The Great Novel depuis quelques mois. Mais, lors d’un voyage pour trouver la perle rare des contrebasses, ils ont été convertis en band. Un genre de route initiatique classique qui impliquait de se perdre à Boston, de boire des Bourbons beaucoup trop cher dans Greenwich Village, de heurter un rat à Manhattan, de se prendre pour des artistes dans Chelsea et de faire tellement d’autres choses qui sont, disons le, totalement inracontables. Ils sont revenus transformés, plus inspirés que jamais par les univers de Kerouac, Twain et Allen. Ils ont donc fait ce qui semblait la chose à faire : ils ont pris leurs instruments, ils ont mâché de la gomme Bazooka à ne plus en avoir de gencives et ils ont partagé une créativité si prolifique qu’elle a engendré leur premier album Ain’t too pretty. Coproduit avec Dany Placard et lancé en mai 2013, ce dernier s’est hissé jusqu’au top 10 du palmarès National folk/roots de Earshot pendant trois semaines et est resté dans le top 10 folk de CIBL pour 6 semaines. Puis, sont arrivées les premières exhibitions et les moins premières, les folles rencontres du Montréal-Musique, les petites tapes dans le dos, les jeux de cartes joués dans les coulisses, dans les chambres douteuses d’hôtel bon marché, dans un fourgon vert pas trop propre, dans les cafés, dans les bars – bref, ils aiment vraiment jouer aux cartes – et sur toutes les routes musicales qu’ils devaient fouler plus de 50 fois en 2013. Le 3 juin prochain, un an après la sortie de Ain’t to pretty, ils lanceront Buffalo Trace, un EP rempli de whisky et de la musique d’amis truands. Le groupe compose actuellement la musique d’une série de reportages sur Jack Kerouac à Radio-Canada Première et cet été ils franchiront plusieurs kilomètres, de Windsor à St-John’s, avec leur acolyte torontois Greg McEvoy.
