Afu-Ra

Afu-Ra is a Brooklyn-born hip hop artist known for his commanding voice, martial arts discipline, and lyrical precision. Born Aaron Phillip, he's a lifelong student of both martial arts and chess, influences that shape his combative, strategic approach to rhyme.

He came up through the Gang Starr Foundation alongside Jeru the Damaja, Big Shug, and Group Home, first appearing on Jeru's classic 1994 album The Sun Rises in the East ("Mental Stamina"), then again on 1996's Wrath of the Math ("Physical Stamina").

Afu-Ra stepped out on his own in 1998 with the single "Whirlwind Thru Cities," which cracked the Top 20 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart, followed by "Defeat b/w Mortal Kombat" in 1999. His long-awaited debut album, Body of the Life Force, arrived in October 2000, produced by a who's-who of the era including DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, True Master, and Da Beatminerz, with guest appearances from Wu-Tang Clan's GZA and Masta Killa, M.O.P., Ky-Mani Marley, and the Cocoa Brovaz.

He followed up with Life Force Radio in May 2002, featuring production from DJ Premier, Curtis Cazal, True Master, Easy Mo Bee, Needlez, Domingo, and Ayatollah, and guest spots from Guru, Big Daddy Kane, RZA, and Teena Marie. Next came the compilation Afu-Ra Presents Perverted Monks in 2004, followed by State of the Arts in 2005, which included another DJ Premier production ("Sucka Free"), Masta Killa on "Livin' Like Dat," and Royce da 5'9" on "Pusha."

Across his first four albums alone, Afu-Ra has sold more than 700,000 copies, cementing his place as one of underground hip hop's most respected voices. He's stayed prolific ever since, releasing Urban Chemistry in 2020, a genre-blending mix of hip hop, reggae, and soul, followed by the Rising Sun EP and a steady run of singles and collaborations through 2024, 2025, and into 2026, including "New Chapter" and "Flava." Still striking flows over militant, conscious lyrics, Afu-Ra continues to work with artists across the globe while staying true to the raw, martial-arts-inspired style that's defined his career for three decades.
