This show was something special! £11 entry, fantastic sound, lovely intimate venue (thanks Martin!) & three worthy artists, which I believe were curated by the Tenebrous Liars legendary music photographer & guitarist Steve Gullick. First on was ex Echoboys & Spritualized guitarist Richard Warren, displaying a real craft on his acoustic guitar displaying his extraordinary voice a guitar talents over ten mainly heartfelt torch songs. One can't help think that his work is not that diametrically opposed to the work of Nick Drake. Some lyrics were better than other but one can't doubt this man's ability. Second up were the surprise of the night the four piece Drift led by the Nicoesque vocals of Nathalia casually imbued by the brilliant guitar of Max. Apart from the final track, interesting though it was which steered towards the more poppier aspect of their spectrum their set was stunning. My personal highlight a melancholic track called 'Bones' where Nasthalia just soared with her understated intensity. Backed by a terrific keyboardist & drummer I couldn't help that this was the best band that Nico never was backed by. Sorry, dear Eric Random, what do I know? I never saw you all perform live! My friend felt the sound was more like Marianne Faithful with a Martin Rev type electronics & Spaceman 3 type guitars. Then we come to the headline the Tenebrous Liars, totally uncompromising & unrepentant: a joy to see for the third time. Seeing a set containing the resurrected 'Jackniffed & Slaughtered' & the recent 'Oh No Reality' was so beautifully savage. Gullick with his back to the audience - which I haven't seen since Jason Pierce did the same with Spaceman 3 some 32 years ago, I'm sure made the 20-30 audience feel we were were experiencing one of their electrifying rehearsals. Add 'Alienation' with the bassists frenetic, unamplified backing vocals & the taught yet brutal 'Your Seed' (as Steve said; "All the hits!") amidst the mix & you had one hell of a night out!
