Fabulous night with Rita and Kristian. Rita is so talented! Bought both cd’s and loving each.

In the days when we bought 12 inch vinyl LPs, they came in a cardboard sleeve that often contained liner notes explaining how each song was written or recorded. In Rita Wilson's current concert tour, entitled Liner Notes, she has recreated that experience with an intimate performance in the round joined by several other song writers who take turns performing and telling the stories behind their songs. At one point in the program, Billy Steinberg, who wrote Like a Virgin and is one of the participants in Rita's show, played that song with only an acoustic guitar. It had the same simple, innocent feeling as when he wrote it with Tom Kelly, and it felt much closer to a less well known performance by Sister Cristina (check YouTube) than to the performance most of us have heard from Madonna. Billy told the story of how no record company was interested in the song for a long time (because it contained the word virgin) until Madonna and her record company turned it into the production most of have heard before. It's an interesting lesson showing how the production and performance can change the way we hear and interpret a song. Great time! So glad I went. Rita will be at The Carlyle Hotel in New York later this week. If you have the chance to go, don't miss it.
