About Society

Society are a country rock band from West Sussex,UK who specialise in gorgeous three part harmonies that set them apart from the current crop of Americana or West Coast rock wanabees in the UK. Society comprise of guitarist Matt Wise, bassist Ben Lancaster and on all things percussive F.Scott Kenny. Their recorded and live sound has echoes of C.S.N.Y,The Band, The Heartbreakers, Burritos, Rolling Stones, Wilco, The Jayhawks and the late great Ronnie Lane and Slim Chance. Matt Wise composes most if not all of their material and the band sing harmony the result is stunning. Since forming Society have supported many great visiting artists when they toured the UK, opening for the likes of The Deep Dark Woods, Eve Selis, Luke Doucet, Deadstring Brothers, Corb Lund and The Wailin’Jennys. Apart from their own UK headline shows, Society have completed two tours of Canada along with a string of dates in the American mid-west gaining a whole new legion of fans in the USA and this has honed both their musical and vocal chops to an outstanding level on both their album releases that met with enthusiastic reviews - 'SONGS FROM THE BRICKHOUSE' and 'A CROOKED MILE' echoing their love of West Coast, Laurel Canyon and the country rock music of the late sixties and early seventies yet bringing their sound right up to date with a distinct indie feel. ‘A CROOKED MILE’ has caught the attention of the legendary 'Whispering' BOB HARRIS who aired songs on both his BBC RADIO 2 shows with the band also being playlisted on BBC Radio Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with Society following up playing shows in Europe where they took in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and The Netherlands with Kurt Marschke performing as both Society and Deadstring Brothers. The buzz from 'A CROOKED MILE' has seen the album still picking up great reviews, the boys recording a session for BOB HARRIS BBC RADIO 2 Sunday Show and turning in barnstorming sets at festivals such as MAVERICK, TRUCK FESTIVAL, Y NOT, BROWNSTOCK and PALMFEST. 2013 also saw Society joing the roster at AT THE HELM RECORDS with a digital single release and finishing up the year as nominees for BEST UK AMERICANA ACT at the UK COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS. Festival appearances and a new album are in the works for 2014. 'Absolutely excellent!......A really gorgeous album!' - BOB HARRIS "Lovely country-rock melodies, wonderful three-part harmonies" Acoustic Magazine “This is one Society that really shouldn’t be a secret” Net Rhythms “It’s the originality and freshness of the songwriting which makes the album more than just a relaxing evocation of times and sounds gone by” Country Music People “In my opinion this is the best Americana album to come out this year” Folking.com "Their other strong point is in the consistently good sense of melody; most of the songs here are instantly memorable…” Northern Sky 'Lovely country-rock melodies, wonderful three-part harmonies' http://societymusic.net
