About Pert' Near Sandstone

Pert' Near Sandstone
Crossing Old-time instrumentation with contemporary sensibilities, Pert Near Sandstone emerged nearly twenty years ago from the Minnesota acoustic music scene. With infectious energy and collaborative spirit, they have established themselves as standard-bearers for the vitality of the Midwestern roots music scene and alongside Minnesota brethren Trampled By Turtles and Charlie Parr. They have toured extensively and performed onstage with the likes of Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas, earning dates along the way with everyone from Yonder Mountain String Band to Steve Martin. NPR's Mountain Stage praised the band for putting a "Midwestern stamp on Appalachian [sounds]," while A Prairie Home Companion described Pert Near Sandstone as “a force on the Minnesota roots music scene and beyond,” and The Current praised their live performances as "a frenzied string shredding spree that takes audiences under its spell." As festival favorites in both the US and Europe, the band helped to launch the Blue Ox Music Festival in 2015, which they continue to host and curate each June in Eau Claire, WI. For the past decade, the now prestigious music festival has helped bring into the local community a great many nationally treasured artists such as Bela Fleck, Billy Strings, Tyler Childers, Jerry Douglas, Margo Price, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Charlie Crockett, The Infamous Stringdusters, Jason Isbell, Greensky Bluegrass, The Drive By Truckers, and so many more.

What fans are saying
What a night. Pert Near Sandstone brought their signature high-energy bluegrass to Ledgestone Vineyard, and the whole crowd was locked in from the first note. Their mandolin, banjo, upright bass, and guitar lineup traded licks all night with the kind of chemistry that only comes from years on stage together, and the harmonies were tight even as the sky went gray and misty behind them.
The opening act set the tone perfectly — uplifting, feel-good music that got everyone loose before Pert Near even took the stage. By the time the headliners kicked in, the crowd was singing along, dancing in the grass, and raising a glass between songs. It's that rare kind of show where the music, the setting, and the crowd all just click.
Ledgestone Vineyard is a fantastic outdoor venue for this kind of thing — good sightlines, room to move, and a laid-back vibe that matched the music. We drank, sang, and danced the whole night through. Highly recommend catching Pert Near Sandstone live if you get the chance, and Ledgestone is a great spot to do it.

What a night at the Appleton Beer Factory! Early James and Pert Near Sandstone delivered a terrific back-to-back show that reminded me why live music is so special.
Early James set the tone beautifully — a smoky southern voice that fills a room, crisp guitar work, and a bass line that gave every song real depth and soul. The kind of sound that makes you close your eyes and just feel it.
Pert Near Sandstone brought the energy up in the best way. High-energy, infectious music that had the whole crowd on their feet and dancing. The room was alive, and you could feel how much fun both the band and the audience were having together.
What struck me most about both acts was how down-to-earth they were — musicians who clearly love what they do and love sharing it. That comes through in the music.
I'm already diving into their catalogs and counting down to the next time they come back to Appleton. If you get the chance to see either of these artists live, don't miss it.
