About Alex Maxwell

Dumfries singer songwriter Alex Maxwell started playing on a consistent basis across Edinburgh at the start of 2015. The songs have taken shape from this. The lyrics are semi-autobiographical and the music has shifted gradually from being troubadour-like to include upbeat singalongs. The music ranges from upbeat finger picking folk ditties to full on indie-folk-rock-pop songs with hooky vocal lines for singalongs. Alex' vocals are inspired his favourite bands in the the Scottish indie scene, he is inspired by the the energy and imagination from The Tallest Man on Earth, the punk rock sense of honesty from Frank Turner, the delivery from Villagers and Bright Eyes and the free flowing melodies of Vance Joy and Shakey Graves.

In 2015, Alex was invited to perform at 'Folksville', 'Sofar Sounds Edinburgh', 'The Listening Rooms', performed feature sessions with Edinburgh Unplugged, Catalyst Sessions, played Wickerman and Electric Fields festival and supported Will Varley.

In 2016, Alex recorded his debut EP and was a Finalist at the Calmac Culture Final held at King Tut's in March, also performing at Oxjam Festival.

In 2017 Alex was 'Artist of the Week' in the Scotsman (national newspaper) after airing the single from his debut EP at Scottish National Music Convention 'Born to be Wide' and was one of only a few artists to receive positive feedback. He subsequently released his first video through Rave Child with the radio premiere on BBC Radio Scotlands Roddy Hart Show. Alex was subsequently invited to perform at the BBC stage at the Edinburgh Fringe. This follows 5 summer festival performances at Electric Fields, Moniaive Folk Festival, Eden Festival, Kelburn Garden Parties and Mugstock. He has recorded his 5 track debut EP 'The Want Comes in Waves'. The EP will be released November 2017 with ambitions to tour the UK and Europe following release... meanwhile a 5 piece band is in place, with singer and violinist Lissa Robertson regularly featuring in duo performances.
