Very entertaining group. They kept the crowd clapping and yelling. I would highly recommend.

I love the energy and attitude and musicianship of this 4-piece band from Nashville. A lot of Deep South influence, which hits me right. It was a rather sparse crowd in a bar-like venue (think: Club Dada or a smaller version of Deep Ellum Art Co). They layout of Magnolia Motor Lounge does not lend itself well to a standing audience in front of the stage -- bummer. But the band were up for the challenge, and nearly all the attendees had seen the band before -- a small but devoted local following. Gabriel Kelley, as the ring leader and primary vocalist, was excellent. I love how he cracks jokes and makes light of the rigors of being a smaller act in the music business. Kevin Martin on fiddle and vocals was outstanding, and Daniel Binkley on banjo also was great. [Note: Daniel wrote the excellent new song "Oldsmobile", which the band recorded with Sierra Ferrell recently. The band performed the song during the set, and it was one of the high points.] And of course, what can we say about Pickle, the bass player? (You just have to see him live -- trust me on this. You have likely never seen this level of energy from a bass player.] I love the band's use of Southern Rock numbers in their live set -- specifically, the Allman Brothers Band and Tom Petty -- this is mostly due to Gabriel's background and influence. If I could give this show 4.5 stars, I would: my only ding against the show is the layout and vibe of the venue. I hope Hogslop String Band comes back to DFW again soon, and plays a venue like Tulips, The Kessler or The Granada Theater.

About Hogslop String Band
Staying true to tradition while maintaining a bold irreverence is something that rarely goes hand-in-hand. But Hogslop String Band manages to walk that line, with their roots in old-time string band music, and their energy based in wild rock-and-roll, you could almost call them punk purists.
It’s an unlikely combination, but given the talents of singer and fiddler Kevin Martin; guitarist, harmonica player and singer Gabriel Kelley; banjo player and singer Daniel Binkley, and bassist and all-round entertainer Pickle, they pull it off with natural ease. The name alone hints at their wacky ways, but catching them live will give you a true sense of these bizarre, seemingly contradictory descriptions.
They thrive on crossing genres, casting off the confines of straight old-time and bluegrass, delving into a deep repertoire of rock, folk, psychedelic, and original numbers that can only be described as,"The Hogslop Sound." It’s clear that these boys are going places, and they've quickly become one of the most unique and exhilarating outfits on the scene today. “It only gets weirder from here,” they often say from stage. They're not kidding.
