About Take Refuge
For booking contact Jason Tate 252-802-0022 or Larry Stephens 252-862-6427. Take Refuge started as a jam session between Andy Hewitt and Jason Tate in early 2010. Tater's college friend Andy was in town visiting, and the two were reminiscing about a revival meeting from a few years earlier where they led worship. Jason told Andy that a friend had stored a drum set in the upstairs of the Activities Center at Piney Grove Baptist Church, and the two decided to get Jason's guitar and go have a jam session. The session was filmed by Jason's Droid X phone, and later posted on Facebook. Throughout the video an old foosball table that was being stored in the same room as the drums could be seen. The videos were labeled "The Foosball Sessions" on Jason's Facebook, and can be seen there today. In November 2010 Andy was planning another visit, and talk of The Foosball Sessions part 2 ensued. Andy and Tater decided to invite Jason White to jam this time. On Black Friday 2010 all three attended an ECU football game, and then headed to Piney Grove for "Foosball Sessions part 2" Several songs were once again recorded and posted to Facebook. Matthew Perry began liking the videos, and took interest in learning to play the drums. On Christmas 2010 Matthew received a drumset, and began drumming to music at his home. In the spring of 2011 Jason, Jason and Matthew got together for several jam sessions at Piney Grove, and would refer to themselves as "The Foosball Sessions". In June of 2011 Tater was asked by the GA group of Piney Grove if the group would play several songs at a talent show that would be held in July. The group agreed, and when the program was printed the group was jokingly listed as "The Foosball Sessions". Soon after the talent show the group was asked to play a pre-concert for one of the October revival services at Piney Grove. The band decided that if they were going to play concerts, that they felt like it should be a ministry. They decided that the purpose of their band would be to present the gospel, proclaim what Jesus had done for them, and lead people in worship any time they took the stage. The group also decided that they should seek a name that was more ministry oriented. Tater started searching the Scriptures and God brought him to Psalms 5:11 'But let all who TAKE REFUGE in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy...The band agreed that this verse represented the heart of the group and decided to adopt the name Take Refuge. Jason White designed the logo for Take Refuge, and it was displayed on the screen for the mini concert at Piney Grove's October revival. The group later preformed in the Habitat for Humanity singspiration that was held at Macedonia Christian Church Up to this point the the two Jasons would swap between the bass guitar, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar throughout their shows. In February 2012 Take Refuge welcomed two new members to the band. Jed Modlin joined as the bassist, and Steven Manning as the keyboardist. In May 2012 Take Refuge was asked to lead worship at the June Horizon service at Williamston Memorial Baptist Church. Bracky Bickerstaff, a guitarist for the regular Horizon worship band played with Take Refuge for this service and afterwards was asked by the band members to officially join the band as the Rhythm Guitarist. In 2013, Larry Stephens, Senior Pastor of Piney Grove, filled the lead guitar. The band also added bass player Michael Pope to the line up. The band is currently writing new material and reworking some old favorites. For booking contact Jason Tate 252-802-0022. Or Larry Stephens 252-862-6427
