About The Capers
The Capers The Capers in their current guise were formed from a band of four friends, all with diverse musical backgrounds, coming together to create a unique sound in the modern era. A f our-piece, resolving to stick to their principles of melodic, tuneful, 60’s-influenced music up front, with the energy and power of a 90’s rhythm section. Lead singer and guitarist Steven Marriner has long been a sixties and mod aficionado, citing The Small Faces, The Kinks and The Jam as influences as well as Northern Soul and Motown. Previously solely on lead, he now plays guitar as well as lead vocals. He is the main songwriter in the four, although the working on, and the credit for the overall songs is always shared equally. He’s rarely to be seen without his Epiphone, a pair of fantastic trousers, or being allowed anywhere near the expensive equipment unsupervised. Bass player and backing vocalist Colin Breavington is a professionally qualified musician. His influences range from sixties pop via rhythm and blues and mod to nineties sounds. Colin’s dedication to The Capers is second to none, as he doubles up as not only a driving and catchy bass player and backing vocalist but effectively the band manager, taking responsibility for all aspects of the band from booking gigs and recordings to making sure there is enough money in the kitty to pay the cab fare home. Colin is well known for ability to combine a rumbling, funky bass style with an amazing leather jacket and sunglasses. Drummer and backing vocalist Stuart Dean is known to the others as Boom. Not as one may suspect due to his hard-hitting style (which he freely admits comes courtesy of his admiration for Dave Grohl), but simply due to his innate loudness. A self-taught drummer, Stuart’s influences are rooted in energetic nineties bands such as Nirvana and Blur, and this comes across in his style - adding an energetic and sometimes frantic backline to the melodic front trio. A one band man, Stuart is also the owner of some of the world’s rudest t-shirts and jokes. Guitarist and backing vocalist Brad Mott, another sixties aficionado, is the latest addition to The Capers. With his distinctive style, from the light touch to mean solo, Brad is a busy guitarist and has riff for all occasions. Formerly a gun for hire, he has found a home in The Capers and is very much an architect of their current sound. Never a hair or piece of cloth out of place, this could possibly be the nicest man you could ever meet. The Capers’ style is essentially the blend of all these elements. There is a clear sixties pop theme with catchy riffs and a sometimes cheeky lyrical style, complimented by a combination of deep yet tuneful bass and powerful percussion. The stand-out feature of their songs was once summed up in the sentence, “They are the kind of songs that you hear just the once, then find yourself whistling later in the week.” The album While Crooks Pull Capers (released February 2011) demonstrates their journey so far, ranging from the beautifully semi-acoustic Rise to the hard-hitting crowd favourite Go Faster Stripes. They currently have material from the forthcoming album available to listen to on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/thecapersband/app_2405167945. Since the release of their first album The Capers have supported Steve Craddock and The Moons. The Capers are usually to be found gigging weekends in Central London haunts such as 100 Club Monto Water Rats, o2 Academy Islington and Underbelly, or at the more prestigious venues farther out such as The Dirty South in Lewisham.
