About Sarah Brown

Born in 1983, in sunny Marlborough, NZ, Sarah is the third daughter in a family with five siblings. Growing up, she was surrounded by music, and every visitor to the house was forced to endure 'The Von Brown Family Singers.' Her Mother's attentive ear picked up Sarah's consistent pitch & unique tone when Sarah was just three and her career was launched at a charity Christmas dinner that same year.

Sarah developed her vocal skills singing along to backing tapes of artists like Boyz 2 Men and Mariah Carey and at the age of 12 recorded her first demo.

At 14 Sarah became frustrated singing other peoples songs & decided to release the music within, but first needed to learn an instrument. There began her love affair with the guitar. Sarah spent many tortuous finger-blistering hours until finally her first song was born.

The creation of her first song inspired Sarah to broaden her musical awareness discovering such artists as The Beatles, Dusty Springfield, Marvin Gaye & Al Green from which she gained her musical direction.

At 16 Sarah left Blenheim for the bright lights of Auckland, & Performing Arts School.

A year later she gained her first residency at a bar in Blenheim and honed her skills playing at functions, wineries, weddings etc. Seeking bigger and better opportunities Sarah flew back to Auckland to compete in the York Street Studios Acid Test & The Ovation Rockshop Songwriter of the Year.

Success! She was crowned Ovation Rockshop Songwriter of the Year 2001, and made Top six in the Acid Test. It was at The York St Studios Acid Test she met her manager Grant Hislop who was a judge and who of course had voted her the winner contrary to other judges!

With numerous gigs in between, 2005 / 2006 realised her life long dream with the recording of her self-titled debut album Sarah Brown at the infamous "DIY garden shed" where both Goodshirt albums were created.

The single Hands has been on high rotate on music TV since the beginning of 2006.

In April 2006 Sarah supported Jamie Cullum, playing to a sellout crowd at the SkyCity Theatre in Auckland. She also performed on Coast TV and Juice TV over New Zealand Music Month in May.

Sarah has gained huge inspiration from her new band, which consists of Mikee Carpinter (Autozamm/Propsboy) on guitar, Benjamin Knapp & Jordan Clark playing bass & drums (The Madison Press).
