About Yann Tiersen
Yann Tiersen's musical journey showcases his constant evolution and experimentation. Starting piano at four and forming his first band at thirteen, he immersed himself in the punk rock scene, playing guitar and synth. After four years in a punk band, he ventured into a solo career armed with a synth, sampler, and drum machine. This phase led him to explore sampling, incorporating toy and acoustic instruments, and crafting his signature motoric acoustic miniatures.
Yann Tiersen's third album, Le Phare (The Lighthouse), released in 1998, marked a significant breakthrough, earning him his first gold record. That same year, he performed at the Rencontres Trans Musicales festival in Rennes, which propelled him into an extensive and ongoing tour.
Yann Tiersen's latest album, Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour, is a two-part exploration of self and society. The first segment, Rathlin from a Distance, features eight introspective piano pieces, each inspired by locations from his 2023 sailing journey. Tiersen describes this experience as transformative, allowing him to shed societal constructs and confront his true self. He states, "Each piano piece is tied to a place we visited, but also to a moment of meditation... meant to guide you to the core of who you are."
In contrast, The Liquid Hour delivers a genre-defying blend of electronics and psychedelic rhythms. Inspired by a solitary night at sea near Belfast, Tiersen reflects on systemic injustices and the urgency for change. He expresses, "There’s a war to wage against the choking vines of capitalism... a rebuilding, hand in hand, heart to heart." This section serves as a call to action, aiming to inspire collective uprising and hope.
Through this album, Tiersen offers a profound reflection on personal and collective experiences, reaffirming his commitment to artistic evolution and social consciousness.
