When asked why he moved to Brooklyn in 2004, Mikey Monteiro has a pretty standard answer. “It’s that small town suburban sprawl disconnect thing. I started running off to the city from Connecticut at 15 to drink underage on the Lower East Side. Moving here seemed like the right way to get out for good.” Couch crashing, odd jobs, and endless bands brought Monteiro to the place he is now with Riverwild. “I was always just playing guitar, but after another band didn’t work out I decided to just start my own project.” Formed in 2010, the Brooklyn-based five-piece is rooted in the spirit of Springsteen and the raw heart-on-sleeve howl of Paul Westerberg but nested into the atmosphere of The War on Drugs and The National. Anthemic yet hazy, dark yet euphoric, Montiero’s songs are concerned with redemption either by God, substance, or women and often, the confusing embrace of what feels like all three at once.
